This EP opens with ‘Cita’ a dancehall-infused tearjerker full of melancholia. When the sun starts to set and you haven’t accomplished what you set out to do at the beginning of the day, you decide to try and cheer yourself up by hitting the club. You’re still sad, but the music is a comforting friend. The lead single ‘Laugh It Off’ hides inner unrest behind a cool, unshaken surface. Deep bass synths get pierced by squelchy sound design, disorientating vocal hits and sharp breakbeats. A tortoise has a shell to fend off predators, and a cactus has its spines. When people feel emotionally endangered, a way to protect themselves is to remain unfazed, even if only pretending. This track illustrates an outward air of nonchalance combined with inner turmoil.
