The month of October celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day held on October 13th. I would like to highlight some of the amazing artists who are also Native American and whom I have collaborated with on projects.
Citlali Arvizu (Gabrielino/Tongva), who performed with me and spoke her language of Tongva for “Instructions for Our Love:Tongva” (UCLA Art Sci Center, 2024), and her mother Virginia Carmelo not only preserve and revive the language of Tongva as members of the Gabrielino-Tongva Language Committee but also preserve and make traditional baskets.
Our public performance was captured as a film and is now ready to be shown hopefully in 2026 along with the release of the book with the Tongva translations. More soon on this. 🙏

One of the two Plant Instructions made during the pandemic. It documents a specific location and time in San Pedro, CA with instructions of where to meetup for the gathering to honor the flowering of the San Pedro Cactus at night.

This will be my sixth collaboration for the sound installation series Talking to Plants, 2018-Present. Inspired by knowledge of how Ojibwe people talk to plants as well as John Cage’s works of chance operations and indeterminacy. Each sound piece placed onto lathe cut vinyl is created in response to two questions: what is the idea of a plant and how would you talk to it?
Citlali Arvizu (Gabrielino/Tongva/Diegueno/Kumeyaay,Nahua) is a language revivalist for the language of Tongva, a member of the Gabrielino Tongva Language Committee, and an archival appreciate for the National Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous languages. She is an organizer and weaver for Nohaaxre Motion Pokuu-the Tongva Basketweaving Collective and is a member of Toveema Tongva Singers.
It has been an honor to work with Citlali on both the record for Talking to Plants as well as on our performance/film for Instructions for Our Love: Tongva.
