‘The Space Between’ is Amanda Oleander’s (@amandaoleander ) debut solo exhibition in Los Angeles, on view at Dorado 806 Projects (@dorado.806 ) until May 31, 2025. The show explores moments of transition and introspection—those quiet, in-between spaces where transformation and self-discovery unfold. Oleander, a Los Angeles–based artist originally from Florida, is known for her emotionally resonant work that merges surrealism with emotional realism, capturing the delicate balance between solitude and connection, and uncertainty and hope.

I started this project primarily to challenge myself as an artist. I wanted to practice working at a faster pace and posting new work consistently even if it was imperfect. I got the idea to draw 100 people after I asked my mailman if I could take his photo for an illustration. I wanted to showcase the life and richness of LA apart from its usual connotations of Hollywood and celebrity.
I came up with a little script and started testing it out on people around my neighborhood when I walked my dog. To my delight, they were willing to engage with me and let me take their photo. One of my favorite aspects of this project was watching facial expressions change when I told them why I was stopping them. Watching this wall come down between strangers felt so special to me, I couldn’t get enough of it.
Of course some people I stopped didn’t want to engage with me at all or did not want me to take their photo. That was a good lesson in rejection and resilience and I’m grateful for that part of the experience as well.
