Tabletop roleplaying games are not a hobby. They are a rehearsal space for the world we are trying to build.
Save this for the next time someone tells you play is frivolous.

The Default Fantasy: the unnamed setting that made one way of being feel like the only way.
This carousel breaks down what the research says about imagination, joy, and difference as counter-practices and one tangible thing you can do about it.
Send this to someone lost in the fantasy of it all.

There’s many hills to die on but nobody talks about climbing them, not dying and moving on. Now that my grandfathers dead, and I didn’t lose myself in grief, I thought it’d be worth sharing all the hills and skills I’ve built along the way.

You were the only one who called me Big I after I grew taller then you. It sometimes felt really daunting being named after you because it felt like I had such big shoes to fill, Papaw. I mimicked everything you did every summer. I hung onto every word and every lesson. I still think about how you never carried around a carton of cigarettes on a trip but always had one to smoke because you could talk to anyone. I didn’t believe you could until the one day we were in god knows where and this man, who had a confederate flag hanging from his truck, gave you a cigarette because you talked to him about lawn mowers.
You still hold the funniest joke title in my heart. Everyone I see who suffers from the terrible diagnosis of “noassatall” will never not be funny to me. You’re the reason I can read in more ways than one. You’re also taught me masculinity is not how you act but how you show up. You loved in such a weird way but I knew that you loved all of us that you’d put your life on the line for us to have ease in ours.
I prepared for this day for months and I thought I’d be in shambles but I had a dream last night where you told me that you’d rather see me tell your jokes then cry. You were the first person to make a joke about me when I was struggling with suicidality and it brought me back from the brink. It’s why most of my social service is just being funny.
When I came out to y’all you told me it’s fine, our next president might be gay and that you loved the Ellen show. Nobody can top that. To know you was to know love in the funniest way. And if you got to meet my grandfather you would know I try my best to be like him every day.
If you have a memory of my grandpa, would love for you to comment below. It would mean the world. And for all my new friends and followers, thanks for witnessing this and all the other things I’ve been through in the last year. Makes sharing his memory so much more special ❤️
Bringing social work into the 21st century and building worlds that love us back.
I wrote the essay I’ve been sitting on for a long time. It’s about why our profession keeps losing the people it can’t afford to lose, and what it would take to get our imagination back. The first three sections are free. Link in bio.

I’M GOING TO @official_gdc ✨
Next week I’ll be at GDC in San Francisco for the first time as a @takethisorg Accelerate Fellow and I am stoked! I’m going to be the most awkward social worker in a space of incredibly cool game developers and I am fully at peace with that lol. If you’re there, come say hi to the overly enthusiastic version of me.
Thank you to @takethisorg for the fellowship and @indomi_studio for the template!

This one is specifically for the social workers!!!!
I gave a talk for @unrsocialwork on where social work came from, what Black radical imagination offers us, and what it looks like to build from love instead of surveillance. bell hooks said love is care, commitment, trust, responsibility, respect, and knowledge. What if that was the foundation? This carousel walks through the whole talk.
What would your world look like?

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and we live in a loveless world. That’s why the org I co-created with some of my favorite people @sparkactionlab will be hosting a book club going through the curriculum outlined in this post. Go give the account a follow and check out our website. There’s a lot of love and imagination coming down the pipeline. Comment if this was helpful, let me know if you want more syllabi, make this go viral!

Authoritarian systems don’t just rely on force — they rely on exhaustion, isolation, and despair. Black communities have survived worse by protecting hope for the future and joy in the present as collective practices, not personal feelings. This post is about how we stay human, connected, and unfinished when power wants us numb.
