~ About Our 2022 Cadre ~
Naomi Columna is a musician and artist whose shape-shifting practice balances performance, audio/video work and installation art. Naomi is crafting a multidimensional, narrative poem, expressed (and obscured) in original music, video and installation, and interpreted by a cast of diverse movement artists each weekend. In conversation with various traditions and styles, the work seeks to provide a common dramatic landscape, inviting exploration of a shared identity or situation. Nate Puppets is an underground puppet ringleader, Queer cartoonist and Black Cultural historian who has been weaving the misadventures of his Cleveland pop surrealist ‘fiends’ through notebooks and puppet stages for over 15 years. His latest concoction for the Cadre showcase is an afro-fantasy, afro-futuristic pantomime bringing together ghosts, spirits, and rabbits inspired by the artistic magic of iconic 20th century Black artists.
Silk Allen, a storyteller and personal stylist whose influences range from fashion and history to the words of Iceberg Slim and Lil Kim, will be creating a fashion show dreamscape that blends memoir, fashion, and hip hop. This autobiographical runway show is an ode to haute couture as experienced by a Black woman from Cleveland.

This is like my fifth or sixth yr working with her on this awesome production about domestic violence and it’s consequences. It’s powerful and entertaining and the fashion show scenes are always on point!

We all worked on this for months, my job is to read the script, identify the looks or give them to each character and work to coordinate looks on stage for each scene for each actor. And the narrator cause he had to look good too lol.

The cast was awesome and I can’t wait to do it again next year!

When talking about fashion films we always hear about the same ones over and over: Breakfast at Tiffany's, Clueless, Sex n the City, The Devil Wears Prada etc... and all of those are great fashion movies no doubt!

But there are so many other alternatives including a few of my favorites: Auntie Mame, Foxy Brown, The Women (the original 1934 version) Willie Dynamite, Grey Gardens (the original documentary) Coffey, Pink Flamingos (watch at your own risk 😫😳) and my favorite of all time: Mahogany!
.
All these films had great plots and stories but the fashion was sublime and most importantly authentic! But Mahogany stands out to me solely because Diana Ross designed the majority of her own wardrobe for this film and that is not discussed enough!
.
The film is not without it's own problems though... join me Sunday to watch, discuss and see how you can get involved to make next year's Fashion Month Cleveland bigger, better and more inclusive 🙌🏿💜
