“Allison V Smith, courtesy of @barrywhistlergallery recently captured a surrealistic image of graffiti saying “Save Dallas History” written into the Henry Moore sculpture in front of the vulnerable Dallas City Hall designed by I.M. Pei. A timely Brassaiesque image given that the 50-year-old iconic building is presently on the chopping block and in a contentious battle between the citizens of Dallas and special interest groups. The framed print will be on display along with 8 limited-edition prints available for cash and carry purchase with 50% going to the Save Dallas City Hall coalition. “

Story by By Amy Qin and Pooja Salhotra
Before graduating in December from a Ph.D. program in Bioengineering at the University of Texas at Dallas, Ghazal Rastegar, 32, had lined up a job in her lab to continue her doctoral research, which focused on easing the long-term side effects of chemotherapy for children with cancer.
But Ms. Rastegar has been unable to start that job because she is from Iran, one of the countries subject to a pause in visa processing. She is now applying for jobs in Europe and Australia, and the chemotherapy project has been delayed indefinitely.
Ghazal Rastegar had a job lined up in her university lab after getting a Ph.D. Now she’s looking for work in other countries.

thanks to The Trace for trusting me with this tough assignment. Portraits made on Easter Sunday of Brittney Ross and her family at their home outside of Dallas.

・・・
Brittney Ross is a mother of six. And she remains a mother of six even after losing two of her children to guns.
In 2023, her son Ah’Bralen was shot and killed in Northeast Dallas, the other side of the city from where Brittney’s family lived. During the early afternoon of January 10, 2024, while she was getting Ah’Bralen dressed for his funeral, she got a phone call from her older daughter. Brittney’s baby girl, Ah’Laynah, had been shot. She died, too.
Ah’Bralen and Ah’Laynah are not the only members of the Ross family to have been shot — they’ve been touched by gun violence again and again. Yet as Brittney mourns, she continues the hard work of keeping her family together.

“They Were Tattooed and Trafficked. Dermatologists Are Removing the Scars. People who are sex trafficked are often branded with names and symbols. Free removal programs are helping them move on. “ Story by @simar.bajaj Photographs for a the New York Times by @allisonvsmith@ddrios
Melody Montemayor was a college student when she was trafficked. Even after she escaped, she felt her tattoos were tethering her to her past. While being trafficked, Ms. Montemayor got a tattoo labeling her as property. Branding tattoos often invoke themes of violence, ownership and control. Allison V. Smith for The New York Times
