Now that it’s been a couple of days I thought I would add to the chorus of sadness over the loss of Brent Hinds. We toured with Mastodon in the early days, never a full run, just a show here or a string of shows there, I think we were on 5 dates together with
@dillingerescapeplan in 2002. We played a kitchen in Atlanta with them the night Tom Brady won his first Super Bowl. They opened for us at Killtime I think, which, if you know us, was grounds for much self deprecating humor in the future.
To be totally honest and transparent we didn’t get to know Brent very well at the time. It’s pretty well documented that he was on a bit of a different path than his band mates at times and we certainly got to know the other guys a little better during our brief time playing the same size venues. I do think I had a beer or two with him at the bar in some Brooklyn venue before the show if I remember correctly.
Steve once told Troy at a Hellfest we played with them “well we’re never going to see you guys again, enjoy rock superstar status.” This is before Remission was out but we had all heard it, and we all knew how next level it was going to go. Steve wouldn’t let them leave until we had a copy of it, even though it wasn’t out yet. As the story goes Steve’s copy of Remission was originally Troy’s personal copy. Who knows, either way, we were right; off they went.
Years later Brent came through the club we called home in West Chester with West End Motel. We were all hanging out after the show and I had to ask if he remembered me. He so sheepishly and sincerely said “aw man, I meet a lot of people.” It was I’m sure a go-to line but it was super sweet and funny and we had a great night.
Coincidentally the homie
@michaelrudolphcummings joined the AEF crew back in 2011 or so and he had gotten to know Brent fairly well through West End Motel and the post folk scene so I was in Brent’s orbit a few more times. Always a sweetheart. Mike had some amazing things lined up with Brent, but I don’t want to speak for him, give him a follow and check out his remembrances in his voice.
Love to all, love to Brent and his family and friends.
