We headed back underground for our 2nd cave scout for an upcoming historical fantasy flashback sequence, with cinematographer Joseph Olivas @owleyedproductions , producer/performer Dustin Perry @delpeartree@hivemindedstudios , and director Alan Lucchetti @alan.lucchetti walking through blocking, lighting, camera movement, and story beats.
There’s something slightly ridiculous about asking your DP to shoot in literally one of the darkest places imaginable: inside a cave, at night. When the lights go out, it is total pitch black. No ambient glow. No friendly bounce. No cheating.
We’ll definitely be checking every battery twice.
But that’s also what makes it exciting. By incorporating the real environment with the latest virtual production tools, we’re building a world that feels ancient, supernatural, yet still grounded in something tactile and real.

My 61st film and television credit just appeared on IMDb, and it feels like a meaningful moment to reflect.
The real number of stories I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of is far higher, and the work has never really been about counting credits. Still, milestones like this are a reminder of how lucky I’ve been to work alongside exceptional crews, remarkable talent, and on projects for some of the biggest networks and streaming platforms in the business.
I’m grateful to have played a part in some truly meaningful stories and documentaries, and for every set, every team, and every opportunity to keep learning and growing. I’m proud of the road so far, but I truly feel like I’m still at the beginning, and just getting started.

We’re testing shots, lighting, and blocking early, and spend our limited shoot days and budget where it matters most.
1) Photogrammetry scan of a local cave entrance inside Unreal for 1:1 scale blocking - accurate actor height, real-world lighting logic, sun position, and honest shadows to help bridge practical + digital.
2) Michelangelo’s “spark” moment - digital cave lighting + atmosphere, with projection mapping ideas layered onto our scanned cave forms to chase something genuinely transcendent.
3) Next step: blending local cave scans with Carrara marble quarry topology to create a convincing historical world that will feel both tactile and cinematic.
There’s a mountain of work ahead: more scans, iterations, tests, and polish. Wrapped an incredible Sundance-week night with the Utah Documentary Association’s “Make It in Utah” panel, and I’m still buzzing from the energy in the room.
Huge thanks to the Utah Documentary Association, the Documentary Producers Alliance, and Salt Lake Community College (Tyler Smith + the whole team) for hosting and bringing everyone together. And thank you to everyone who came out for a frank, no-bull**** conversation about the state of film + documentary work in Utah and what we can do, practically, as a community to elevate it.
It was genuinely awesome seeing so many friends, local filmmakers, and new faces show up, ask questions, and lean into the bigger idea: we don’t have to wait for opportunity, we can build it together.
I’ll be posting a few snippets from the conversation soon (some great moments worth sharing). For now, I’m just grateful to be part of it. A great way to send off Sundance… and look forward together.
