Screening! On 27.06, 7pm, I am very excited to have a screening of a new short film “Replicated” at our studio at Storkower Straße 115a, 10407, Berlin. Replicated is a project that blends elements of music video, video art, and nature poem. It takes its name from an ambient work by the late Reuben Samual Winter (Waitaha / Kāi Tahu / Te Aupōuri / Te Rarawa / Ngāti Kuri) (1994-2020). The work is a reflection on the New Zealand landscape shot on Super 16mm. The project was filmed over 2 days on a visit to Tāmaki Makarau (Auckland) in February 2023. It is set in the Waitākere Ranges regional park, which borders the western edge of New Zealand’s largest city Auckland. The Waitākere Ranges is a place for healing, exploring old growth forests, swimming in the Tasman sea and walking rugged as beaches. The core of this film its landscapes, sunsets and psychedelic forests. Being in nature was incredibly important to Reuben as a source of healing. Before his death from suicide Reuben was a very active and inspirational member of the New Zealand music community. Dedicated to Reuben, this project uses his ambient piece ‘Replicated’ from the 2017 album ‘Totems’ as both its name and soundtrack. It is a poem about the Waitākeres, a documentation of its landscapes, and a platform for Reuben’s work to live on. This place is somewhere Reuben and I shared a personal connection to. As soon as I had a car at 17, I would drive out to the Waitākeres and spend a lot of time there, exploring the bush and the beaches. The Waitākere Ranges was sentimental to Reuben too. On a drive down its winding Scenic Drive, he excitedly told me about some of his favorite places: a spot for a good view and an abandoned silo where he had once recorded music (the acoustics were just perfect). Our last project together, ‘Stunt 151,’ was also shot here. Respect for nature is the focus of this work. alwad on the light for RITUALS earlier this year Super happy with how this project came together, it’s a fun time to be working with light because we are at intersection of old and new - having access to old school fresnels along with the latest led technology. My strengths as a gaffer and creative i think comes from my experience of starting out as a trainee in New Zealand and later becoming a gaffer here in Berlin. I like to mix not only the two styles of working but also mixing older tungsten lights and newer led lamps to create a delux visual experience. greatful to have the opportunity to do this. Had the honour to team up with @hannahleejade to shoot some special pieces from her archives earlier this year! Hannah specialises in repurposing fabrics, creating hand made and sometimes hand painted peices in our hometown of Tāmaki Makaurau. We shot this on a stormy Febuary day before the Cyclone in Muriwai earlier this year.
