I am not kidding when I say I just had the best screening experience of my whole entire life. It has been a long term dream to make a film that would break the concept of “sticking to one lane”. I was sick of doc films being made only for festivals while being based on the struggles of people who never get to celebrate their own stories. Especially on the big screen. And then came Auto Queens where every single thing aligned. A film about VPMS was celebrated by VPMS on the big screen today with the reception a FDFS mass hero film gets. I cannot ask for anything more out of these 32 years of existence. I’ve peaked. I saw faces full of laughter and wonder and joy and even tears at how overwhelming it was. I felt it too. And I can’t believe this dream is finally coming true. We made a film that landed, both for folks in a totally different part of the world and ourselves in a way of celebration of friendship. We made a film that made people laugh and cry and clap and whistle based on the facts of very real life. And more than anything - feel represented. I cannot believe we did this still. I made a 2minute kutty Doc shot entirely on 16mm film and it’s screening at @16mmfilmfestival screening on 30th November BGM @fermentation_lab Sound Design and Mix @joe_jayan Thank you @harkat.studios @talwar_karan @keyu.rious 💐

This film came to us when we were tired of fighting the system for our basic rights and dignity. We were hopeless, mentally exhausted and worn out. Decided not to take up this project a couple of times. But I guess Mathi clearly had other plans. He waited patiently and somehow brought hope back to us. His brief was as simple as ‘go make a film.’ No one had ever told us that before. We decided our roles, @sraiyanti as director, me as cinematographer and together became line producers, recordists, accountants, drivers… everything needed to get this made. She first met union members, spoke to people, returned and wrote a docu-fiction story. We shortlisted, interviewed, discussed, fought, inspired each other and she built a narrative while I worked on the budget. We found Puthiran for location sound and Saranya to help us. A few days into the shoot, we decided to stay with Mohana-ka and Leela-ka. Those two women changed everything, the film and us. I learnt and unlearnt so much from them. We struggled between the narrative we wrote and the life we were witnessing, until we decided to drop the narrative and simply be with them. From there, the camera disappeared.
The narrative became life. The film found its soul. In the edit, Sraiyanti cut without losing its life, stitched it with care, and poured her own soul into it. I watched the first cut on our little monitor and cried. I couldn’t stop crying while she asked me what I thought. We hugged tight, laughed, kissed, had a couple of drinks and danced. Then Storiculture took it to the world. Though I missed watching the world celebrate it on big screens, I still live in the joy of that first cut. I wish VPMS gets the acceptance they’ve been fighting for. I wish more working-class women feel safe, empowered, respected and find friendship, sisterhood and laughter. Raghav shaped a soundscape that gave the film more life. Adhithya, the most patient colourist in that dark room. Thank you, Anand GK and Shino. And thank you, Sraiyanti, for pushing my limits and choosing me as your cinematographer. None of this would have happened without your madness, and belief when the world didn’t believe in us.
