What happens when an artist turns the algorithm against itself?
TSRB & Digital Media (@dm.gatech ) researcher @lim_hyunha practice does exactly that. Since 2021, she has been collecting daily screenshots of personalized Instagram ads through @algorithm_diary and reconstructing them into handmade collages, printing algorithmic fragments onto fabric, then braiding, stitching, and assembling them by hand.
Her latest project, Re-Materializing Stone Mountain: Stitching the Automated Surface, extends this into new territory. Supported by the @aiai.network 's seed grant program, the work examines how generative AI represents place — and what gets lost in the process.
When AI models generate images of Stone Mountain, they produce outputs that look coherent but strip away history, politics, and material context. Lim responds through intervention: printing AI-generated fragments onto silk satin and reconstructing them through cutting, stitching, and quilting.
Each stitch is a decision. Each seam is a record of human agency reasserting itself.
In a moment when generative tools are becoming deeply embedded in everyday life, her work raises an important question: how much do we give up when we outsource perception to automated systems?

I’ve had an idea for years to place a camera obscura tent on historic sites so people can see the world projected in the dark, like Plato’s Cave. The twist is that historic photographs taken on that spot, say, after the Civil War, or during the Civil Rights Movement, will bleed into the reality of the projected image you see from the outside world using an AI stable diffusion model. Visitors will see the past and the present at once projected in the dark tent. I need to admit I have almost no idea how I’ll do this, but I know I’ll have fun going down the rabbit hole of puzzling it out. THANK YOU to the Atlanta Interdisciplinary AI Network @aiai.network and the Mellon Foundation for believing in this idea and awarding me a seed grant to make this happen in 2026.

Are you interested in AI’s hidden costs especially from the point of view of African content moderators? Join next week Friday at Emory PAIS 561 at 11:30 am for a student open discussion with Time100AI and BBC100 women honoree @Kauna.Malgwi
Malgwi is a clinical psychologist, trauma survivor, and advocate for the mental health and rights of digital workers, whose journey began when she worked as a Facebook content moderator, where she was constantly exposed to graphic and violent content. She now fights, along with other African tech workers, for the right to fair wages, safer working conditions, and trauma-informed mental health care.
Lunch will be provided.
The @aiai.network fall kickoff event is today at 4pm on the Emory University campus in Convocation Hall!
From custom AI models trained to detect information about Sacred Harp Singing to maps that document the commuting paths of Atlanta’s AI workers, and from explorations of how image models render queer histories visible to workshops that engage area kids in AI-assisted storytelling, we’ll discover how humanistic thinking can direct us to new areas of AI research—as well as what additional limits are exposed.

**Meet Snigdha 👋**
Snigdha is a PhD candidate in Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences at Emory University. Her research uses natural language processing to study how law and policy can reinforce inequity—or serve as sites of transformative change. At #AIAINetwork, she serves as our Curriculum Specialist, supporting the development of a repository that showcases the teachings of Network members across Atlanta.
