Grammy day 2 at the nominee reception! Wearing the most beautiful dress from @madexhudson with red poppies. Red poppies are a symbol of Palestinian resistance and also bloom in Syria, while yellow Mexico poppies bloom in El Paso. I wrote about poppies in the album notes for Árabe and love that I get to wear something that ties into the history and stories of this project.
Tomorrow is the big event! You can tune into the premiere ceremony livestream on the @grammys YouTube starting at 12:30pst!

Three days until Árabe is out!
🌵
Árabe is my album about Mexican and Syrian shared history and culture – the story of my life, lineage, and identity. I spent 5+ years researching, interviewing, composing and writing 12 original songs and essays. The album covers everything from food, gambling, and evil eyes to immigration law, biracial identity and the fraught relationship between immigrant entrepreneurship and workers’ rights. Árabe is deeply personal, relatable, relevant, and encompasses my full artistic self- so there’s a bit of country, some pop, jazz, and 60+ pages of essays in the art book that holds the vinyl record. Out May 9!
Árabe is 1 year old today and oh what a year it’s been! We played across the country getting to spend time with old and new friends, seeing family along every tour stop, and discovering new ways to play this music. I have been honored with the reception of this project from my hometown… and we got a GRAMMY nom! Much more to look forward to in the next year - I’m not done with Árabe yet!
Thank you @progress_321 and @elpasomatters for honoring women in the arts in El Paso!
Last month I was the keynote speaker and performed for this wonderful event and was thrilled to meet so many amazing fellow artists in the borderland. I spoke about how we all need a way to make sense of the world, and through our work, have the privilege and power to implement change.
