At the edge of Borgarfjörður Eystri, we found one of the most unforgettable stops of our Iceland trip 🐧
Every summer, more than 10,000 pairs of Atlantic puffins return to these cliffs after spending months out at sea. They’re surprisingly small in person (only about 28–30cm tall), incredibly photogenic, and somehow even better to watch in real life. We spent hours here just watching them!
A few puffin facts I didn’t know before coming here ⬇️ • Puffins mate for life and often return to the same burrow each year • They dig burrows into the ground instead of nesting directly on cliff ledges • Around 60% of the world’s Atlantic puffins breed in Iceland • Puffins have solid bones, which helps them dive underwater — but also means they flap their wings incredibly fast while flying
Watching the puffins felt utterly unreal, it’s truly one of those places that makes the long drive completely worth it 🇮🇸

The Tundra Swans have begun their Arctic migration for the year!
Each year, Tundra Swans cover an over 6,000km journey with stopping points along the way before their final destination in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic of Canada and Alaska for their breeding grounds.
Along their journey they stop at ‘staging’ areas, where they spend their time feeding and resting, which is why we can see them in Southern Ontario in the spring! They can typically be found in areas of wetlands and fields, including the Thedford Bog, near Pinery, Aylmer Wildlife Management Area, Long Point/Port Row, Rondeau and similar areas. They can stop anywhere for a few days to weeks depending on the ice conditions.
In the fall, they’ll return south and start the 6,000km journey back to their wintering grounds - so if you didn’t see them this spring, you’ll have another chance later on this year.
They’re already on their way North, but if you ever have the chance to see these majestic creatures, they’re amazing to watch!
