Looking back on the GF Smith Colorplan ‘Portal’ project hashtag #colorplanvinyl
This was an incredible experience of working alongside
@t_e_m_p_l_o and
@gfsmithpapers to produce a commercially produced vinyl sleeve 💿
I had the opportunity to design and develop 1 of 10 winning album cover designs, for 'Portal', a 12” vinyl album by
@father_insta exploring the music of colour. father interpreted the G.F Smith
@colorplan_papers range into a euphoric ambient soundscape.
I had some inspiring chats with father about the world of sound design. We talked about the intuitive, healing experience of producing ambient music, which I aimed to channel when producing my outcome. My process was driven by the ambient album’s enrapturing sound, it evoked a memory of sunbeams filtering through trees. I explored different processes to visualise those flickering rays of light. 🌅
The flickering sunbeams became a minimal, pointillist pattern on top of my film photography, which I felt portrayed that sense of nostalgia and tranquillity. The pattern was embellished with shimmering foil from
@foilcoltd , which pierced the organic tones of the Colorplan Mid Green perfectly. 🥝 By using a white underpinning of various opacities, the layered photos really popped out of the design, bringing a sense of depth that I’ve never had before when printing. Thanks to the maestros at
@pressisionltd for that!
This experience gave me a lot of confidence when pitching ideas and taught me the importance of optimising your ideas based on feedback, to find the best way of capturing your vision.
