An excellent result after a challenging start and what was a very complex project. Deep Pit Footbridge was statutorily listed at Grade II in September 2023 which presented a major hurdle to the electrification of the Wigan to Bolton railway line.
We helped @networkrail@kiergroup@rjp_town_planners@tonygeellp to help navigate the listed building consent process to raise the bridge by 1 metre and provide new compliant approaches. This involved specialist heritage and design advice together with collaborative discussions between @wigancouncil@historicengland and @the_victorian_society to explore various options for the bridge.
We provided a supporting Heritage Statement which assessed the significance of the railway bridge and the impact of the proposals. We also undertook a detailed survey and photographic record of the railway bridge which has now been deposited within the Greater Manchester Historic Environment Record.
The diligent and robust work by the whole of the project team, pre-application discussions with key stakeholders and positive engagement with the Council has led to a decision within nine weeks. A great project which has secured the continued use of the listed structure and also ensured limited disruption to the delivery of this important electrification project.

Birmingham City Council has approved Sama Investments plans to develop 546 homes and 710 student beds on a brownfield site in Birmingham’s Digbeth Quarter. We provided heritage advice and a supporting heritage statement for the proposals.
Designed by @tpbennettllp the Garrison Circus development will include affordable homes and student rooms across four blocks. It will retain the locally listed Myona Building, historically home to Jacobs Biscuits, which will be converted into flexible amenity space. Plans also include a 37-storey building which will act as a new gateway into the city centre.
The proposals will form a part of a wider masterplan to reinvigorate Digbeth Quarter and will deliver transformative change to an underutilised brownfield site. #birmingham #regeneration #development #heritage #planning
An exciting scheme for Oldhamers and everyone in Greater Manchester! It’s great to be supporting @oldhamcouncil , @fcbstudios and Paul Butler Associates on the new Oldham Coliseum Theatre. The works will see a new purpose built auditorium at the heart of the site which connects into the Grade II Listed Former Post Office and Former Friends Meeting House which are to be refurbished as communal, educational and performance spaces.
