The last few days (months) have been a total blur, as I’ve made and installed this massive commissioned work for @melbourneartfoundation and @ngvmelbourne These photos don’t explain the size of the work or, for me, the importance of the commission. It’s currently installed at the Melbourne Art Fair and tomorrow night it heads to NGV for installation. In addition to the commission I’ve made these twin Pearl Cabinets for the @oigall_projects booth, and lent this massive vase that greets people as they enter, encountering @brahmanperera ‘s salon lounge. And I have made rings for the gorgeous @_altaforma_ booth All the while I have been supported by countless loving, encouraging champions to get it all done. It’s has been life changing.

less discernible edges, 2025 A survey of objects I have designed for function. This show is currently on @artisanqld - an organisation I care deeply about, as they have worked for decades to nurture and promote the craft and design sectors in Queensland, and they gave me my first exhibition opportunities in the early 2000s. It’s such a privilege for me to have this exhibition. If you’re in Brisbane drop in! Beautiful photo by @danielleobrienart

COMMISSION 📣 Building on Melbourne Art Foundation’s long-standing commitment@to supporting practicing artists through grants (over $1.5M since 2003!), we’re proud to introduce a new Design Commission for the 2026 Fair, commissioned in partnership with @ngvmelbourne . The recipient of this inaugural commission: Melbourne-based artist, designer and all-around icon; Anna Varendorff @varendorff @acvstudio . Trained as a metalsmith, Varendorff’s practice spans jewellery, sculpture, product and lighting designs. Defined by pared-back tubular forms, graceful arcs and slender brass or steel lines, her works culminate in refined objects that merge craft discipline with industrial clarity. For the Commission, Varendorff will present her most ambitious composition to date of her iconic 𝘜 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘷𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴, expanding her hallmark of tubular forms into a striking installation of ceiling lights, suspended vases and monumental floor vessels. The suspended elements are fabricated from aluminium U-shapes, mirrored in pairs — one upright, one inverted — to create rhythmic compositions that can both hold floral and cast light. The installation spans overhead and underfoot, offering a moment of stillness amid the energy of the Fair (or even the perfect place to spark a conversation). After its debut at Melbourne Art Fair, 𝘜 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘷𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴 will be on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Fed Square. - Images: Anna Varendorff in her studio. Culminating last Tuesday, and for the week preceding, I had the incredible privilege of taking my work to Japan with @artisanqld ; meeting Australian colleagues, visiting galleries, artists and studios in Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka, seeing craft work of highly accomplished, historically respected and justly esteemed skill, and finally exhibiting our pieces in the Australian Pavilion at @osaka.expo.2025 What a wild ride for a week. My heartfelt thanks goes to those involved, especially thanks to @artsqueensland , @tradeinvestqld @dfat for supporting artisan’s Osaka Expo 2025 delegation. Thanks also to artisan’s generous supporters who continue to make their vital work and advocacy possible, including @Arts Queensland: through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian; @creative.australia @Australian Cultural Fund; as well as The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation. And a massive thanks to my fellow delegates and behind the scenes organisers for such a great experience @artisanqld @hopevaleartsandculture @girringunart @tomsummers.co @catherinelarge_jeweller @elysharei @mscarmelh @angspillane @tiffany_Ljohnson @miha_pat

EXHIBITION OPENING // Anna Varendorff returns to artisan this October with less discernible edges, her largest solo exhibition in Queensland in over a decade. Born in Brisbane and trained in contemporary jewellery at Queensland College of Art, Anna launched her first jewellery collection at artisan in 2004. Since then, her practice has expanded across sculpture, lighting, furniture and jewellery - blurring boundaries between disciplines with elegance and intent. Under the moniker ACV Studio, Anna handcrafts her highly sought-after vases alongside a broader practice that includes regular exhibitions, public art, and private jewellery commissions. Refusing categorisation, she will invite audiences to view a collection of existing and new interior objects, including items from COPPIA, a recent lighting series that combines Bakelite fittings, vintage glass and frames handcrafted from brass and brazed steel. Visit the website for more details and join us for the opening on Saturday 18 October!
