Needle to the Groove proudly presents “Courage Under Fire” by Aceyalone & Mumbles on limited 45 RPM with art-card available exclusively on bandcamp & in NTTG stores. 300 black vinyl copies pressed and only 100 are available with hand numbered art card! Shortly after making the conceptual underground masterwork, A Book of Human Language, legendary Project Blowed founder Aceyalone and beatsmith MUMBLES reconnected for sessions that found their way onto MUMBLES’ 2007 release, Transformations/Illuminations. While the bulk of the album consisted of MUMBLES’ emotively driven beats, Acey appeared on two songs that exhibited not only his penchant for dexterous deliveries but also an innate ability to align with whatever the production calls for. “Courage Under Fire” begins with ominous undertones that give way to Acey’s contemplations on manhood, family, God, fame, and legacy, before recentering the track’s thesis: how does one find the courage to be brave in the face of swirling inner demons and outer chaos? It’s another concept piece with flourishing moments anchored by the duo’s undeniable chemistry. A timely reminder for the headstrong during the current political climate. “Freedom Now” feels diametrically aligned to its A-side, with Acey firing off stream-of-consciousness rhymes of stark imagery, all of which orbit the idea of freedom — freedom in ignorance and freedom in death. “Freedom rang but it never gave me a goddamn thang,” says Acey, who sounds as if he’s reciting scripture over production that feels like it’s teetering on the verge of detonation.
