On the 23rd April, I had the ABSOLUTE pleasure to be invited back by @unioftheartslondon to speak at their Future 50 Award Ceremony! Having won the Future Founder for @lcclondon last year with my social enterprise @accessify_uk I was privileged to come back and share what I had learnt in the past year! The highs. The lows. The successes. The struggles. But most importantly? To share what makes it worth it when everything feels to much. Making change in the world we live in today is not easy. Infact, a lot of the time it can feel like where on earth do I start? There are so many battles, on so many fronts, and none of us can change the world on our own. That’s why, with initiatives such as the Future 50 Awards, we can inspire everybody to take on one battle. Create one innovation. To slowly make a difference, and make this world a better place. Today, I was privileged to being invited to teach a group of Special Care Dentistry trainees about Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and the Dental Experience! 🦓 🦷 ✨ This session covered: 1️⃣ What is Ehlers Danlos Syndrome? 🦓 2️⃣ How Ehlers Danlos can affect teeth and oral health? 🦷 3️⃣ My own lived experience of oral health and dental access. ✨ 4️⃣ Improving inclusion in dental practice to better outcomes and reduce anxiety / trauma 💙 5️⃣ How Special Care Dentistry can genuinely change lives 🏥 I became a patient of special care dentistry six years ago. It genuinely changed my life. I am super excited, and proud to announce that OXTED is getting a BANKING HUB! This project started what seems like forever ago. A project led by our conservative county councillor, Cameron McIntosh, and a huge collaboration of community groups, businesses, our MP and the general public! It is a project that shows in real life that cross-party and different political and social perspectives can come together and build positive impact for their community! It is a practice we need more of, especially during times of such division. Through my hat as founder and director of Accessify UK I got involved in the beginning pushing for this to be approved. Then, on DAY ONE of my counsellorship, I met with LINK, Claire Coutinho and Cameron McIntosh to convince LINK that we need a banking hub. That we are a rural area, that we have high priority residents, that we need ACCESS to CASH! On the 26th January I had the pleasure to be invited to speak on a panel discussion at the event The Future is Creative! 🚀 ✨ This event was a collaboration between University of Arts London and The Chancery Rosewood to celebrate their launch of a one year partnership to bring creativity into all sectors, including hospitality! It was a privilege to speak on stage with two other phenomenal alumni from University of Arts London and discuss how creativity is at the centre of everything we do. From my perspective, I shared the perspective of how important design thinking is needed in a world that is becoming ever more polarised, and how I personally use design to break down accessibility barriers to improve quality of life! We don’t talk about teeth very often, do we? 🤔🦷 They’re one of those parts of health that sit quietly in the background… until suddenly they don’t. 😩🦷 Until pain, fear, treatment, or loss makes them impossible to ignore. 🏥 For me, living with Ehlers-Danlos means my teeth have never been simple. 🦓 They’re part of the story I don’t always tell, the surgeries, the repairs, the shame, the fear of dentists, the slow rebuilding, and now the possibility of losing my front teeth. 😢 It’s not life-threatening… but it is life-impacting! 💥 What’s made the biggest difference is being under a Special Care Dentistry team who truly understand my condition and adapt everything around what my body needs. I’m deeply grateful for that level of care, but I shouldn’t have to be “lucky” to receive it. 🙏🏼 🦷 Too many people can’t access dental care at all. 🦷 Too many disabled people can’t find clinicians who understand their needs. 🦷 And too many communities are left without NHS dentistry entirely. Dentistry is healthcare! 🩵 It affects dignity, confidence, eating, speaking, and everyday life! It belongs in every conversation about the NHS and the future of accessible care. 💙 We must remember when talking about the NHS! On the 30th October, I had the absolute joy of joining @ual_alumni as a facilitator for an evening of meaningful networking at Central Saint Martins! ✨ The whole aim of the night was simple: To take the AWKWARDNESS out of networking! 😬 Then, replace it with real conversation! The kind where people actually see and hear each other, not just swap business cards!!! We broke out into small groups and I shared prompts to get the room talking including: 🌱 What does your future look like? 🌱 What is holding you back right now? 🌱 How do you want to grow? And honestly, the conversations were incredible! Our founder, @achapmanmiller who is currently at @uklabour conference in Liverpool, had the chance to listen and discuss the future of our health and social care policy with the remarkable @wesstreeting Wes Streeting is the first Secretary of Health and Social Care who we can truly say and believes that this is a portfolio he cares about. In fact, it’s not a portfolio for him, it’s a lived experience. Our founder got to share their experience, and receive true empathy, and to be heard, and to leave knowing that what we are doing, really does matter, and is respected. What an absolutely INCREDIBLE evening we had! 🤩🎉 A huge thank you to @neurodiversityarchnetwork for inviting me to speak at your inaugural event, Intersectional Neurodiverse Experiences in Architecture, Design and Education! 🌟 It was an honour and privilege for our founder and chief executive @achapmanmiller to deliver a brand new keynote talk on going beyond the ramp! ♿️ Exploring how accessibility has become a compliance issue, rather than a human one. A curated checklist to do the bare minimum and tick your box. 📊✏️ Instead, we explored how accessibility is simply the entry point, and actually inclusion is the journey! 👣 Together, our founder delivered a new positionality about how access is not just about removing barriers, it’s about belonging. Yes, we can build access through concrete, but inclusion can only begin when it’s woven into our culture! 🙌🏼 Not forgetting how our intersections, our personal lives affect how we experience the world, and how people interact with us! 🌍 The key takeaway? Listen. Listen your people. Your client. Your staff team. Your friends. Whoever it is. But truly listen, and hear what they need, don’t decide for anybody other than yourself.
