MR ALAN ON SATURDAY Lovely short, written and directed by the wonderful @floratennant Flora and I, wanted the camerawork of this piece to exemplify Alan's awkward but charming Britishness, so we decided to push the boundaries of conventional framing, allowing body parts and whole people to be cut by the frame to achieve this quirky feel. This short has had a big impact on how I approach framing of which I am super grateful for. REJOYCE cont. Few more stills from Rejoyce and BTS pics. One reference David gave me was the painting Last Portrait of Mother by Daphnee Todd. The fragility in the painting is something we wanted to incorporate into a scene where Winifred is sleeping. A side by side comparison can be seen on images 4 and 5. I love using references that aren't solely film frames. I'm sure many would agree that there's so much the art world can offer to cinematography. @abi.hurcomb hosting COLD WATER Can't go wrong with a giant vat of metallic shiny liquid! Cold Water was directed by @adrobtv and co-produced by Marijn Maas for the incredible artist Chinchilla. This was a really interesting music video to shoot, particularly from a lighting stand point. I took a really less-is-more approach and even incorporated a giant red heater into the lighting after loving the colour and quality it produced. The shininess of the liquid really reflected a lot of light back so there was no need for any kind of fill. This was shot on probably one of my favourite lens sets, the spherical lomos okcs on the Alexa mini. @abi.hurcomb hosting 👋 COLD WATER A really fun short, written and directed by Leanne O'Neil. For this film we really wanted to get a slight sense of claustrophobia felt by the main character and portrayed through the framing, so decided to develop a visual language where we always kept quite spatially close to her with the climax/release moment finally allowing our lead room to breath with some luscious wides. The hero lens for this very quickly became the 32mm, and we were lucky to shoot on gorgeous Cooke Speed Panchros, which really helped to bring out the natural colour of the environment. @abi.hurcomb takeover! BO & MEI Why not start at the beginning! Bo & Mei was one of the first projects I shot, a piece written and directed by the incredible Camille Nock. (@camilleliunock ) a film about a lovely human called Bo who explores their gender by stealing a customer's negligee from their father's laundromat with the support of their sister Mei. As a queer filmmaker, this project is very close to my heart. We were very lucky to have been able to build a set on this one. Big shout out to our production designer @veevilynn , who really went all out on textured dark wall papers for the rooms despite the classic short film shoe string budget. Our studio was, however, very small, so my gaffer @krabbenorbert and I devised a plan to use mirrors to gain distance for some of the lamps. We used a lot of old school heads on this, like the ol' reliable kino 44 plus a healthy dose of tungsten heads. As an intro to me, I went to Film School but my real journey was from the bottom up through the Lighting Department, from Trainee to Floor Best Girl in long form, to Gaffer on commercials and now to DOP. Not always an easy route, but I was very lucky to meet some amazing people on the way who really helped me hone my craft and made me the filmmaker I am today.
