I’ve seen and played many shows. A lot on this very stage. And I can’t and won’t speak to any ideas as to “authenticity” or what “Americana” is or isn’t. But I do know that there is a space between the industrial rust of the east and the southern ways and texas songwriter twang and stoned west coast harmonies and northern thrash ,where a certain type of music seeps up from the ground. You can hear it in Jason Molina, and Uncle Tupelo, and few other bands and artists from this misshaped quadrant of the midwest. Souled American is one of those bands and tonight they manifested this irregular geography, after 30 years, and it was beautiful.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest, I share with you select comments from him (The Style Fairy) on a paper I wrote for his class in 1997.
I was a brash (perhaps arrogant? Ha!) genx post physics grad, pre-internet web1.0 goofball who went back to school with dreams of getting a masters in cultural theory (can’t get more genx than that tbh.) and this paper was my naive attempt to play ball with a master.
I have a few other papers he graded, but this was the final paper for the class he taught on the post-modern novel, and our time to shine. I was more enchanted with the ideas I had than the execution of those ideas on paper, as he quickly (with humor and kindness) pointed out…repeatedly.
That said, it was an electric, hilarious, and intellectually stimulating experience to have been in a class led by him and I never missed a single one, which for me, at that time, is saying something.
I still cringe at the paper I presented to him. However, it is why, even now, I triple proofread almost every important email or document I write.
