Started as multiple versions of appliances on actor, Nathan Simmons, applied by Halifax Prosthetic HOD @patricksortreats and @mike_a_lewis . Ultimately it was decided to build a quick full bust as well for some extra painful moments and a deep eye cavity, which Patrick and Mike also wrangled in Halifax. Washington Black (2022) - The team completed a few very quick builds for this series. We made 5 versions of an octopus in about 2 weeks, starting from a printed 3D model with some traditional detail cleanup. Versions included floppy, posable, a legless VFX version, a dead version, and a full cable articulated puppet version to submerge in a tank. Those were shot in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The seal was prepped in about 2 1/2 weeks with a full mechanical head, and with puppeteer @yetigord inside, and @kayladobilas handling the R/C. The team shot this in Iceland where it was initially intended to be used for the dying (and dead) moments of a speared seal, but a new director stepped in 3 days before travelling, and decided he wanted it scooting around the glaciers before being speared, something it was never intended to do. 🤷‍♂️. V-Wars (2018). @jessicanoelleharmon in vampire mode. This Netflix show started with dozens of vampire characters of different ‘species’, but the shooting schedule wasn’t written up in a way to allow for the mid-day application time for the human to vampire look transitions, which were pretty much instantaneous in the context of the show. Whistle (2026) - Mr Craven. The amazing @mcoulier had taken a head and torso cast of Nick Frost for us to reference for the several stages of the Mr Craven sequence. Not only did we need to lose Nick’s beard and hair, we were also going for cancer driven emaciation and a more pale, sickly skin tone. This was a tough one though since there was limited reference of Nick available without facial hair, and the double (Brandon… who was great by the way) had a significantly larger head and face than Nick, making a spot on likeness quite difficult. @stevekochworld worked all of Nick’s features onto Brandon, and then worked backwards to thin out the sculptures as much as possible while maintaining a Nick look. Applied over multiple shoot days by @steve_newburn @adrianmakesfaces and @kayladobilas . We also created a half head ‘transformation’ look on Nick, which @adrianmakesfaces applied. We knew that VFX would be taking over for the 360 camera move in the scene, and they added their own touch of Nick to the final sequence. Another good collaboration with VFX Sup. Matt Glover from Herne Hill Media. Additional work consisted of a false Nick torso worn by him for the profile shot facing himself, as well as a functioning inner torso with beating heart and breathing lungs, which also oozed black bile, again, enhanced slightly by the VFX team. In 2023, @pauljonesfx reached out asking if we’d be interested in taking on a sizeable amount of this show that he’d been approached about by producer @hollygowhitney . Thanks Paul! With both of us already on other big projects, it made perfect sense to divide up what was a ton of practical work that included not just makeup, prosthetics, and suits, but also puppets, animatronics, and a lot of blood gags. Since she’s all over the trailers, here’s a few pics of the Crone and some BTS pics. Corin was wanting something a bit stylized with some retro-ish influence, and based on the attached concept by @damalto . I’d suggested one of our regular collaborators, @kaliehunternero for the performer. After more discussions about how to shoot things, we added @flexy_t for some cool contortion and movement shots among other things. Lots of people working on this one at various times to get her prepped, but the primary sculpting was @hunter_fx @giegiesculpts @colin_penman . We’d actually created a full head to toe look, not knowing early on what the wardrobe from costume designer @lk_costumes_ would be. The set pics are from the first shoot day (pool scene) applied by @steve_newburn @kayladobilas and @adrianmakesfaces with @alanna_dickie handling the contact lenses.
