I’ve just finished the biggest curatorial project I’ve ever done: a social history exhibition about surfing in our region
@yam.coffs You can check YAM’s socials for the official photos, but here’s some very average quality behind-the-scenes photos with heartfelt thanks.

1. My co-curator Vanessa and I were excited to see a Sugardrive board at
@waterclosetsurf . We gathered there with a group of women for a photoshoot.
2. A beautiful photo of Lacey from that day by
@twinrivers_ .
3. Trophies and footage of local legend Hilary Melittas, who placed third in the 1964 World Surfing Championship! Her incredible story highlights the lack of recognition faced by many women surfers we worked with.
4. An exhibition view showcasing part of the ecology section with works from the YAM collection (
@rayrixonart ) alongside the Gumbaynggirr surfer section featuring Uncle Ken Craig’s red board shaped by Billy Tolhurst.
5. Huge thanks to
@twinrivers_ and
@waterclosetsurf for their invaluable support in the final months.
6 & 7. A Free World Weapons board, shared by Dylan from
@traditionsurfboards . So many people texted us photos of boards to complete our shaper display—thank you! Dylan’s generosity was so encouraging throughout.
8. We exhibited a recreation of an iconic 1960s Bob Weeks photo of women surfers in Sawtell in 2015 featuring Lyn, Margie, and others.
9. Uncle Tony Hart’s board, also shaped by Billy Tolhurst. Uncle Tony painted this in just three days (!) and was incredibly supportive of the project.
10. A unique image shared by Ronnie Goddard, showing items for display like an April Fools surf report and a well-worn tool with his hand marks imprinted into the wood.
11. Objects loaned by
@johnwitzig , whose support was appreciated during overwhelming times! His photographs were beautifully paired with
@duncanm ’s.
12. A wholesome screenshot of
@deathbydigital and his mum. Brandt has been a huge support as well as loaning part of his body board collection and photographs.
13. Geoff, Noel, and Les were instrumental to the exhibition’s success. Here’s Geoff pictured with Mickey.
14. During installation, trapped with 2 Outer Island boards
