Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of supporting the @nambuccavalleyphoenix Phoenix Art Prize, celebrating artists from the Mid North Coast who live with a disability. I was honored to be part of the fantastic judging panel. I also had the wonderful opportunity to mentor and collaborate with @jooleesun , who curated the exhibition. Congratulations to all the talented artists involved, and a special shout-out to the exhibition winner, Sue Wilson! Here are just a few snapshots from the day @_sarah_jae_creatress_

John Tuckwell: A Survey celebrates the thoughtfully crafted porcelain vessels of Bellingen-based artist and respected potter John Tuckwell. John’s work captures the interplay of light, colour, and texture, drawing inspiration from local landscapes, abstract forms, and the materiality of porcelain itself. The painterly surfaces and translucent porcelain reflect both the natural world and John’s personal experiences. From elegant early works to more layered, constructed forms created after a life-changing stroke, this exhibition showcases the evolution of a practice shaped by place, adaptation and innovation. 8 Feb – 23 Mar 2025 @porcelain_john @yam.coffs

Zoe Golding, We walked to the other side of the world, 2023, digitally enhanced graphite drawing 531mm x 648mm Yarrila Arts and Museum collection Zoe Golding's artwork, We walked to the other side of the world, was exhibited at Yarrila Arts and Museum in June 2024 as part of the Saltwater Freshwater Arts 2023 touring exhibition. The artwork demonstrates a unique artistic vision and cultural perspective. Zoe Golding, a multidisciplinary artist of Bunganditj and Gumbaynggirr heritage, currently based in Glasgow, Scotland, draws upon her upbringing and experiences to create deeply personal and evocative artwork. We walked to the other side of the world captures imagery from Zoe's journey to Tromsø, Norway in the summer of 2023. This artwork explores themes of displacement and cultural identity, reflecting Zoe's introspective narrative about feeling disconnected from both her foreign surroundings and her own cultural roots. Through her detailed technique and storytelling, Zoe contemplates the complexities of belonging in both emotional and physical landscapes. In addition to its aesthetic and emotional depth, We walked to the other side of the world holds significant contextual relevance within contemporary discourse on identity and belonging. Zoe's exploration of the liminal space between cultures resonates with broader discussions on migration, diaspora, and the fluidity of identity in a globalized world. This piece not only enriches the Yarrila Arts and Museum collection by adding a perspective rooted in personal narrative and cultural heritage but also contributes to ongoing dialogues about the intersections of art, identity, and place. [Written by Ash Frost, Curator, 20 June 2024] Congratulations @zoe_golding_

I’ve just finished the biggest curatorial project I’ve ever done: a social history exhibition about surfing in our region @yam.coffs You can check YAM’s socials for the official photos, but here’s some very average quality behind-the-scenes photos with heartfelt thanks. Cover @andthetreesphotography 1. My co-curator Vanessa and I were excited to see a Sugardrive board at @waterclosetsurf . We gathered there with a group of women for a photoshoot. 2. A beautiful photo of Lacey from that day by @twinrivers_ . 3. Trophies and footage of local legend Hilary Melittas, who placed third in the 1964 World Surfing Championship! Her incredible story highlights the lack of recognition faced by many women surfers we worked with. 4. An exhibition view showcasing part of the ecology section with works from the YAM collection (@rayrixonart ) alongside the Gumbaynggirr surfer section featuring Uncle Ken Craig’s red board shaped by Billy Tolhurst. 5. Huge thanks to @twinrivers_ and @waterclosetsurf for their invaluable support in the final months. 6 & 7. A Free World Weapons board, shared by Dylan from @traditionsurfboards . So many people texted us photos of boards to complete our shaper display—thank you! Dylan’s generosity was so encouraging throughout. 8. We exhibited a recreation of an iconic 1960s Bob Weeks photo of women surfers in Sawtell in 2015 featuring Lyn, Margie, and others. 9. Uncle Tony Hart’s board, also shaped by Billy Tolhurst. Uncle Tony painted this in just three days (!) and was incredibly supportive of the project. 10. A unique image shared by Ronnie Goddard, showing items for display like an April Fools surf report and a well-worn tool with his hand marks imprinted into the wood. 11. Objects loaned by @johnwitzig , whose support was appreciated during overwhelming times! His photographs were beautifully paired with @duncanm ’s. 12. A wholesome screenshot of @deathbydigital and his mum. Brandt has been a huge support as well as loaning part of his body board collection and photographs. 13. Geoff, Noel, and Les were instrumental to the exhibition’s success. Here’s Geoff pictured with Mickey. 14. During installation, trapped with 2 Outer Island boards

Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness by @studioeness is currently showing at @yam.coffs In this iteration of Modern Guru, we travel deeper into the strangeness of Al, highlighting its carnivorous appetite for human creative output. As Al trawls through the history of human cultural endeavour - mapping and mimicking human artistry - we ask: what does it create but outcomes that currently appear hollow in contrast to human-made artworks where the hand of the artist is authentic and palpable? See Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness at YAM @yam.coffs until 10 November 2024. Photo credit: @andthetreesphotography

DISCO immerses you in a world of vibrant colour and fluid movement; the lines between reality and fantasy blur as @alunrhysjones captures the euphoria of being in a nightclub. These paintings are a love letter to the LGBTQI+ community, showcasing the unbridled joy of being able to dance and express yourself, freely and openly, in a safe environment. On now at @yam.coffs What an absolute pleasure to work with @alunrhysjones who I am lucky enough to now call a friend 🥂✨ Images by @andthetreesphotography

Tomorrow is the last chance to experience Kirsty Lee's evocative solo exhibition, From the Horizon to Here, at @yam.coffs . Curated by me with a deep appreciation for her artistic vision, this exhibition invites you to explore the delicate interplay of home and memory, as Kirsty reflects on the landscapes and experiences of her upbringing in the Nambucca Valley.
