Introducing members of our International Curatorium — meet Ignatia Nilu from Indonesia.
@ignatianilu is a curator, researcher, and cultural producer specialising in the intersections of craft, contemporary art, and material culture. Their work explores the contradictions between past and future, indigenous and modern, craftsmanship and automation—emphasising how art remains deeply tied to community craftsmanship. A curator for @artjog.id since 2015, Nilu engages in traditional knowledge with contemporary innovation, advocating for craft’s revitalisation in the Indian Ocean region and beyond.
We’re very excited to work with Nilu towards the next iteration of IOTA.

Introducing members of our International Curatorium — first up, Kallol Datta, artist-curator and researcher from Kolkata, India.
A cornerstone of Kallol's work is extensive creative research in clothing practices, native to SWANA, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Their practice reflects upon reconstructing and restructuring memory, episodic events, and history, to negotiate larger questions of ideas revolving around research as production. Their artistic and curatorial projects are driven by community, acts of resistance against structural inequalities, shared processes of healing, and radical ways of knowledge building. Kallol was the curator of the inaugural edition of Kolkata Queer Arts Month 2023 and was a member of the curatorial team at the State of Fashion (STOF) Biennale 2024, Arnhem, Netherlands. As well as IOTA, Kallol is currently on the Creative Advisory Council for the STOF Biennale, 2026.

Today's IOTA24 throwback is of Indonesian artist Ari Bayuaji's work, 'Weaving the Ocean'. From civil engineer to creative social entrepreneur and installation artist, Bayuaji lives between between Bali and Montreal, transforming found materials from Bali's shores into reflections on our daily lives.
His short film illustrated how his weaving project sustained the livelihoods of highly skilled weavers in Bali during the pandemic lockdowns and created new industry for them, as well as reducing the mountains of ocean waste on their beaches.

"IOTA is an invitation to connect meaningfully with our ‘Rim Residents’. In a turbulent world, that’s a gift for Western Australians."
Victoria Laurie, Seesaw Magazine, 13 November 2025.
As we look back at IOTA21 and IOTA24 whilst planning the 2027 edition, we are struck more than ever by the ability of craft to bring us together, to learn about each other, and to enjoy sharing our similar and differing cultural stories and practices.
"The Indian Ocean Craft Triennial, or IOTA, is a rarely heralded story of unparalleled excellence and survival."
We thank Victoria for her article - articulating many things which we are often too reticent to shout about.
