How do we imagine the things we can’t see?
‘can you hear me? is a sculptural installation and deep-sea opera. The work explores the internet’s physical and power-laden infrastructure – one that runs on the bottom of the ocean floor as a huge network of submarine tubes and cables, following currents of an embodied and obfuscated history.
The installation is a collection of washed ashore parts and pieces of the internet's undersea cable infrastructure, its histories, imaginings, organic and non-organic formations. The artist has combed imaginary beaches like a jutter (/ˈjʏtər/, Dutch: someone who combs beaches for objects, preserving treasures from other worlds), translating this world into a constellation of ceramic, metal, PVC and found-object sculptures. Their forms imagining deep sea, digital infrastructures, and fragments of a network and intimate digital connections usually unseen.
From the installation emerges an operatic monodrama, composed and built on a bed of found-sounds from internet cable landing site ‘Floreat beach’ in Boorloo/Perth. A data-mermaid sings, and reaches out through currents of questions, and reflections on power structures and imagination, whilst searching for connection.’
Some snippets from the opera libretto:
Are you there?
Can you hear me?
Internet, connection, imagined.
New tech built on old worlds and older infrastructures.
Connecting continents, waves and wires, node to node.
Covering the globe
Port to port, sea to sea.
Are you still there? Can you still hear me?
I am rust, pressed into salt
Sand to silicone building new empires on the routes of the old
Cast their shadows, playing god on their pixelated thrones
With colonizers violent precision, a place to rest your code.

OPEN CALL FOR SHOW: EXHIBITION OR PROJECT 2026
We are very excited to invite proposals from all creative practitioners for three paid ‘Show: Exhibition or Project’ opportunities in October/November/December 2026.
The programme for Show: Exhibition or Project aims to encourage artists and contemporary practitioners to take risks with their practice and engage with local audiences in the presentation of their creative work. We invite artists, curators and collaborators from all creative disciplines to apply for this programme. We support applicants to present creative work that is experimental, investigative, extends existing art practices and engages with contemporary artistic discourse.
These paid opportunities are the backbone of our programming. CURRENT recognises the time, intellect, labour and skill that an artist/creative/curator expends in creating works and making them available to the public. We hope to lead by example, paying artists for their contribution to society and create the change we wish to see. We wish that these programmes can lead to debate and dialogue around contemporary practice and its future.
Applications open Monday 9th of March 2026
Applications close midnight Sunday 19th of April 2026

Pressure can cause debilitating and overwhelming stress or lead to hyperfocus and spectacular performance.
Over the past year, I have been exploring how to harness pressure to enhance art making.
The results of this process will be on display at CURRENT this Easter long weekend: a series of energetic, gestural oil portraits.
I would love to see you there. Details below x
