MIDNIGHT ZONE (ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK) - OUT MARCH 13, 2026 In 2024 the artist Julian Charrière asked if I would be interested to compose the score for his upcoming film Midnight Zone. The film follows the path of a Fresnel lighthouse lens as it descends deeper into the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, a remote abyssal plain in the Pacific, rich in rare metals and increasingly targeted for deep-sea mining. We talked about what kind of music would accompany the emptiness and rhythms of the ocean - how to score a wordless film whose main characters are sea life, the lens, and light beams. I recorded most of the material on a TransAcoustic piano amplifying a Montage synthesizer, alongside viol da gamba, violin, and processed ocean foley. Listen to single ‘Sunlight Zone’ now! It was a beautiful process working with Julian on realizing the sound of this absolutely incredible, powerful and meditative film! The album is available as a gatefold vinyl with a special booklet featuring full color panels of film stills. Also, as a CD, and available digitally / on streaming sites. I’m grateful for Julian’s trust to also put out the music as an album on Awe. A true honor to have @laurelhalo ’s composition navigating the pressure and eternal night of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone for the score in the film ‘Midnight Zone’. ⁠ ⁠ Combined with stacks of violin and viol da gamba, the music possesses trace elements of a human hand in an otherwise sunken, alien landscape: submerged and very much alive. The score captures an "oceanic feeling" by filtering synthetic tones through physical instruments, blurring the line between circuitry and touch. ⁠ ⁠ So excited for Laurel’s upcoming LP! The original soundtrack will be officially released on March 13.
