Springs Eternal is HERE! It’s finally out! I am overjoyed! There were honestly some days in the last couple of years when I thought this album would be permanently collecting dust up there on the shelf for the rest of eternity, but thanks to the brilliant minds, tireless work and constant support of the following people, I am very pleased to say that it is OUT EVERYWHERE to listen to and to hold in your hands: @charlottegush / @tenderanalysis / @nljudge / @toughloverecords / @practisemusic / @jmvallance / @jasonmitchellmastering and of course @miketunng / @alexander.painter / @genevievedawson / @brianeno - Thank you all soooo much! I really hope you enjoy this album in whatever format you wish to listen to it in. It’s the most melodic and direct music of my career, and although the words can seem dark at times, remember that there are more than a few tongues in cheeks happening, and lots of imagination at play. Yes there’s some real grappling going on, but in reality I remain bright-eyed and committed only to the cause of bringing music into the world as a means of trying to make it even a tiny fraction better. Today I will happily bask in the glow of appreciation I have for myself, for getting another record over the line and out into the world. I imagine some Guinness will accompany the basking. See you out there at the indie record shops and the grassroots music venues. Show yours the love it deserves XX

I have a new song out today on a fantastic compilation of bands and artists on the @toughloverecords label, which celebrates its 20th birthday this year and that has been the home to my recent records including last year’s Springs Eternal and everybody’s favourite and mine Great Spans of Muddy time. I remember telling Stephen (awkwardly pictured after the ICA show in May) that I had an album I was going to put out by myself on Bandcamp, as we supped our first post lockdown pints in the garden of The Stag’s Head. He was intrigued enough to listen and then convince me that I was out of my mind and that he should release it. 6 months later our record was born - with its exceptional cover art courtesy of a dead Dutch painter. And the rest, as the podcast says, is history. I highly recommend you feast your ears on this collection of tracks as they span the full range of diverse wonders that Stephen unearths and champions on the label. And I recommend you get those credit cards ready to order the vinyl edition with artwork by in house genius Matthew Walkerdine. The song was something I’d come up with every part for in my head over the space of 12 months. When Stephen asked me for a new song I knew exactly what one would work. I’m really happy with it and it occupies somewhat different territory for me. I hope you enjoy!

2024 1) TOTAL STRIFE FOREVER turned 10 in Jan - I’m going to be playing it live next year, stay tuned 2) Springs Eternal was released in Feb - produced by brother @miketunng and feat pals @alexander.painter and @gdawsonmusic 3) Did a nice chunk of touring in Feb / March / April, including lots by train! Thanks to the shops for my instores, @bccamplight for a great support slot and @alexander.painter for making the headline jaunt so wondrous 4) Did the first 1000 piece puzzle of the year in April 5) Was papped with my dear friend @luke_a_turner at Acid Horse in Wiltshire 6) a flower falls on @charlottegush ’s head in one of the many wonderful Jardims in Lisbon 7&8) rehearsing and then installing with my true buddy @orlandoweeks (plus @georgesheriffsewell and @hudsonscottuk ) for his brilliant London residency 9) Dosa number 1 of many at Spice Delight with @drofnref and Miranda 10) I finished reading @robynhitchcockofficial ’s memoir in Winchester, which is fitting as that’s where most of it was set 11&12) We moved again - this time over the street and into a place with this garden, which produced this fresh produce 13&14&15) Orlando, @glyndaniels , @babouska__ , @georgesheriffsewell , @gileshardcastle and myself smashed it on @sundaybrunchc4 , with thanks to @fairlaneguitars for the lovely Zephyr (first photo by @babyskins ) 16) another brilliant (let’s just focus on the brilliant bit) EOTR with the gang again (photo by @chloejasminehenderson ) 17&18) On the road again with Orlando, this time with added @hudsonscottuk and reunited with my brother @georgehider ! Next week, this album, and sadly also this face, will be 5 years older than it was 5 years ago. I’m doing a Bandcamp listening party for it on 1st November at 8PM GMT. We shall listen together and I’ll try to shed some light on the making of it. Thanks to everyone who made the Springs Eternal release one so special back in February. Mostly just this recently. A Casiotone keyboard from 1983 that I got for £17, my four track cassette recorder, and a nice bottle of Isopropanol to wash it all down with. I want for nothing more. Springs Eternal came out 4 months ago. Ancient history! And on that note, Mike’s album made with friends Anna (B Savage) and Ross (B Lake), plus its amazing live version augmented by wonderful Alex and super talented Adam is out now. It’s called Supershapes Vol. 1. Go listen! Shows with Orlando were absolutely lovely thanks and there’ll be some more later this year. Elsewhere I’ve been listening to loads of Paul McCartney for some reason and I’m half way through reading the Wikipedia page of every Beatles song. It’s just funny how much insane detail it goes into. What else? I thought the (probably?) inevitable exit of the Tory party would feel more exciting but it’s actually just another event that’s been smooshed into the background noise of existence, alongside animal videos and footage of people being murdered. Nothing means anything it fees like. That’s probably why I’ve been hiding in Beatlemania. What richer and more detailed alternate universe is there available to us? It’s literally a place you can go to in your mind. Hope you all have the spiritual / actual equivalent of a four track and keyboard to get lost in. Hope you’re well. See you soon. No worries if not! X
