A big freeze, rip, crunch: how will the Universe end? 🌌
Artist and composer Robin Meier @_robinmeier_ has begun his residency at the Laboratory. Alongside multidisciplinary artist Vimala Pons @vimala_pons , they were selected for the sixth edition of Connect.
In collaboration with theoretical physicists, Meier is exploring various cosmological theories regarding the ultimate fate of the universe. He is also gaining an in-depth understanding of the Laboratory's experiments, including the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, which searches for dark matter and antimatter from the International Space Station, the Antimatter Factory, and CAST, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope.
Through their project, Meier and Pons aim to transform this research into immersive experiences using spoken voice recordings, electronic music, light environments, and sonified data from particle events.
Connect, a collaboration framework between Arts at CERN and Pro Helvetia, serves as a platform for dialogue between artistic and scientific communities.

Robin Meier Wiratunga’s new work emerged from a residency at CERN in Geneva, where he explored cosmological theories about the end of the universe in close dialogue with theoretical physicists. Scenarios such as the Big Crunch, in which the expansion of the universe reverses, or the Big Rip, where matter is gradually torn apart, form the conceptual starting point of the installation. While most members of western societies make sure to avoid the topic of their own mortality on a daily basis, the fact that not only our planet but also our universe will surely come to an end might offer a different kind of perspective — or even ease. With a tone that moves between surreal humour and quiet contemplation, the work invites us into an unconventional guided meditation that leads towards this ultimate horizon. Staged as an intimate group ritual, barriers between measurable, analytic and scientific realms collapse into personal, emotional and spiritual realities. In collaboration with author-actress Vimala Pons the artist designed a hypnosis-like audiovisual journey blending spoken voice, scientific research, field recordings from CERN and a hallucinogenic light environment. Our first year bachelor students paint on 35 mm film during a class of Robin Meier Wiratunga @_robinmeier_ many thanks to @lichtspielbern , part 2
Want to do this next year?
Study Sound Arts and apply to our bachelor program till the 1st of April 2026!
Do you want to explore spaces with sounds and images? The Bachelor in Sound Arts introduces you to the world of electronic music, sound art and new media. In this full-time course, you will learn how to compose music and electronic sounds for various media. The range of topics is broad – from sound art and film music to electronic music and interfaces that combine space, movement, sound and light.
Please see the links in our bio for all information on our bachelor program and how to apply. Apply till the 1st of April.

🌊🔊 Robin Meier Wiratunga’s ‘Sea of Noise’
Working in dialogue with theoretical physicists, @_robinmeier_ focused his residency at @cern on cosmological theories about the end of the universe.
His work-in-progress spoken word and sound performance ‘Sea of Noise’ moves from the birth of the universe – through a bodily encounter inside the Large Hadron Collider – to its heat death.
Blending poetic language and scientific narrative, it invites an embodied meditation on our personal and cosmic ends.

🌌 What might it 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 like to live through the end of the Universe?
Following his residency at CERN, Robin Meier Wiratunga @_robinmeier_ reflects on his research into cosmological theories of the universe’s fate, his recordings of the Laboratory’s sonic realities, and how we might sense our cosmic ends through embodied meditations.
