Lisandra Alvarez is a Cuban photographer and graphic designer based in Havana. She teaches Photography and Typography at the Higher Institute of Design, where she also studied. She came to photography gradually, surrounded by friends who were already shooting, learning by asking questions and seeking out references in the one park in her neighborhood that had a Wi-Fi signal. Her training was almost entirely self-taught. Her work is rooted in Centro Habana and Habana Vieja, neighborhoods so surreal, she says, that she connected with them immediately. But she doesn’t think of herself as a classic street photographer. She calls her approach “intimate documentary”: she almost always needs some kind of exchange with her subjects before pressing the shutter. The result is a Cuba that feels known from the inside rather than observed from a distance. She works primarily in analog, which has made her selective by necessity. She’s been documenting a children’s circus in Centro Habana since 2022, and is also working on a long-term project inside a house where women and small children live. On my walk through Central Havana, already in the afternoon, I came across this boy. The mole on his face instantly caught my attention, and I took a first photo of him right at the spot where we met. Afterwards, I talked with him and got to know him a little, and he asked me if I wanted to go up to his house. Boy and photographer, we finally went up, and suddenly, everything changed.
