Up for a challenge? Last week I shared an exercise I made inspired by the DRUM with Mike and Eddy Podcast. This is the same exercise kicked up a notch! The concept is simple: 3 paradiddlediddles, 3 six stroke rolls, 3 paradiddles, and repeat. However, now we play those same patterns as sextuplets THEN 32nd notes! For an added nightmare add the left foot on quarter notes.
This was further inspired by Mike Johnston’s concept of “fellowshipping” with a pattern. A pattern itself (paradiddles) for example has no set dynamics or rhythmic value so it’s up to us to explore all those possibilities. Can we play it as triplets, 16ths, quintuplets? Can we put an accent on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd notes? Can we start the pattern on the 3rd note and continue? Etc! Once we have fully explored these possibilities does something become truly ingrained into our vocabulary on the instrument. Anyways, hope you enjoy this exercise! Thanks Mike and Eddy for the inspiration! 🙏🏻
