"Nothing makes me more keenly aware of the fact that I live on an island than looking at Nick Goss’ (@_nickgoss ) paintings," writes Phin Jennings (@phinphinphinphi ) for Ocula.⁠ ⁠ "The canvases that punctuate the walls of his east London studio are portholes looking on to an array of half-imagined, watery counterfactuals. What if the north-eastern tip of Kent was still an island, as it was up until the middle of the last millennium? What if London flooded? What if the whole country flooded?⁠ ⁠ When I speak with Goss on the phone, he is on a trip to Vienna, having just finished the paintings that make up his solo exhibition, 'Eel Pie Hotel' at Josh Lilley gallery (@joshlilleygallery ). His subject is a real hotel that once stood on an island in the River Thames, which became a venue for starry jazz and rock concerts during the 1950s and 1960s before burning down in a mysterious fire in 1971."⁠ ⁠ Read a conversation between Jennings and Goss on Ocula now, link in bio.

Excited to share our new collaboration with @folkclothing will be launching next week - Wednesday 29th at Folk on Eastcastle street in Soho. This is the third time over the last ten years @philgoss1 and I have worked with @cathal_folk and the team making drawings, watercolours and paintings that are developed by their designers and turned into garments. Looking forward to showing these new paintings and works on paper @joshlilleygallery at the end of this month. The works come from numerous trips visiting the eponymous Island in the Thames near Twickenham where the legendary Eel Pie Island Hotel was situated. It hosted the likes of Bowie, The Stones and The Who until it burnt down in 1972. Many thanks to @juliette_losq for showing me around the island. Eel Pie Hotel opens April 23rd 6-8pm. I made this picture after going on a walk down the Thames (near where we live in Greenwich) and seeing the incongruous sight of a truly colossal square cruise ship squatting in the water. There was something wonderfully absurd seeing this enormous ship docked so close to home - almost a feeling of megalophobia that I wanted to capture in the drawing.'
