Review of Kevin Beasley’s “What delineates the edge” at @regenprojects for the November issue of @artforum

Grupo Ñ, Defining Ñ, closes this Saturday 10/18 at @joanlosangeles 🎙️🪩 Throughout the exhibition’s run, the collective has continuously transformed the installation by changing the images in the wall display and video projection, and adding new photographs to the vitrine. Each week, these contributions have been compiled into individual publications, drawing from both online imagery and physical books borrowed from the library, which are also on view in the gallery. This layered visual vocabulary reflects their ongoing research. Opening this coming Saturday at @joanlosangeles ★ We look forward to seeing you Saturday, September 27 from 6-9pm for the opening of 𝘿𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 Ñ, the first institutional presentation of the Los Angeles-based collective 𝗚𝗿𝘂𝗽𝗼 Ñ, founded in 2023 by artists 𝗦𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗮 𝗟𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗮, 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗼, and 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻. Formed while studying at CalArts, the group explores identity through shared language, with “Ñ”, often mispronounced by non-Spanish speakers, as a symbol of cultural complexity. 𝗚𝗿𝘂𝗽𝗼 Ñ presents a four-week evolving installation resembling a functional office space, where a printer and blank sheets generate text-based works from past projects, literature, visual references, and transcribed by interpreter Alexia Veytia-Rubio—each word and exchange building an accumulating public record. Each week, the works are compiled into a publication, culminating in three editions launched with public programs that highlight immigrant linguistic contributions and invite critical dialogue. Available to read in the gallery, these evolving texts question the authority of the “finished” work and foreground how language is used, reused, and felt. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟳–𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟴.
