A custom art crate ships more air than object across an ocean, and for designers outside the Western market centers, the freight bill is one of the main determining factors of whether emerging designers enter the global design conversation at all. ‘packing list’ takes the quotidian Japanese craft of wrapping and securing objects for transit, the hand-tied rope work, the modular crates, the weight distribution and orientation marks, and recontextualizes it as the design vocabulary of the exhibition itself. New work by Jun Fujisaku reconfigures as it moves, borrowing the logic of the Japanese interior where a single room becomes a bedroom, a study, or a tea space depending on which panel slides. "looping" The packaging methods used by Japanese stonemasons are still carried out with rope alone, regardless of the scale of the object. The approach is simple, little more than basic wrapping intended solely to protect the edges and sharp corners of shaped stone. In conventional modes of transport, protection is achieved by forming a box structure that separates the object from the outside world. This packaging process, by contrast, forms a soft structure around the object itself, as though tracing its form, and achieves protection through that embrace. It is also particular to stonemasons that objects are transported just as they are, in this state. The relationship between Japan, rope, and the act of binding runs deep historically and culturally, yet this method of binding practiced by stonemasons has no codified rules and no established name. Rather, a sense of protection has been quietly passed down through generations of stonemasons, sustained by a blend of practical necessity and embodied aesthetic sensibility. “looping” developed from this distinctive packaging method of the stonemason into a project. A stonemason runs rope across a pre-made, unified object, reading its contours and surrounding space with flexibility, looping the rope from three directions at each apex, pulling it taut so as to accentuate every edge. alter. 2025 tokyo @altertokyo 会場：日本橋三井ホール 会期：2025/11/07（金）-2025/11/9（日） 時間：11/07,08 10:00-20:00,11/09 10:00-17:00 @takahashi.sekizai @tomoakiinoue4331 @jiro_woodworks @sdanley_design_works @ryotaakiyama01 @d_tado @yosuke__matsushita @sooooohma "packing list" ものを送る際、内容物の保護を目的に行われる梱包作業。緩衝材を使用した破損の防止をはじめ天地の設定、内容によっては防水や冷蔵、運搬車のスピードの上限など、保護の仕様は実に様々です。 海外輸送ともなると、距離や経路を加味したより厳重な梱包作業が必要になってくるのですが、日本は東アジアの島国という立地上、諸外国に比べ輸送コストがどうしても高くなってしまいます。そのため日本の各企業は、輸送費削減に適した合理的解決と審美的価値の両立を歴史的に実践してきました。軽量で小型で組立式といったような、効率的なモジュール化+最適化により立地的なハンデに答えたのです。しかし、ユニークピースである美術品輸送においてはどうでしょうか。そう融通のきく話ではないかもしれません。 美術品の場合、実制作外の制作物として、作品に適応したクレートを準備することも珍しくありません。費用が別途かかるうえに大量輸送のような同梱が困難で、形体によっては容積重量に対して「空気を運んでいる」というケースも頻繁に発生します。制作されたクレートも、作品の背後にあるいちサービスとして文字通りバックヤードに潜むのみで、存在やコストを鑑賞者が意識することはまずありません。さらに文化芸術品に伴う課税や賃借にかかる保険、とりわけ西洋圏への輸送コストや所要日数に関しては、立地的にどうすることもできないのが実状でしょう。 結果として、国外での発表機会の損失や、国際的なマーケットの未発達など、作家がドメスティックになり得る要因が輸送にもあるのではないかと感じています。 こうした観点からも、私たちは常々「送り方」に関して異なるアイデアを持つ必要があると考えていました。本展project: packing listは、立地的な制約を負う「私達の送り方」を起点に、輸送システム自体をものづくりのプロセスとして内包できないかを検証したいと考えています。 packing list前作の"tracing"では、作品を保護するクレート自体の作品化を検証しました。 メンバー個人の作品に対し、プロダクトとして副次的な機能を持たせた変形クレートを作成することで、1度の行程で2つの作品を国外輸送するという内容でした。 その検証結果を受け2作目となる本作loopingでは、個人間輸送だけでなく、BtoBの輸送形態や流通の歴史的背景にもフォーカスしたいと考え、石工とフォワーダー(貨物利用運送事業者)とのチームアップをおこないました。 現代の輸送においてもっとも一般的な梱包素材となると、エアキャップやスチロール、テープやPPバンドといったものが最初に思い浮かびますが、石工の梱包素材はというと、制作物の規模にかかわらず今でもほとんどが縄のみの使用に留まるそうです。方法も単純で、成形された石材のエッジや、ピン角を保護するだけの簡易梱包で全てなのです。石材自体の重量で輸送時の荷崩れがおこらないということもありますが、宅配便サービスに不向きなこと、地場的素材であることもあいまり、基本的に自社や組合所有のトラックによる輸送で完結してしまうので、必要以上の梱包はかえって不便という潔さなのです。海外輸送時も変わらず、パレットにそのまま平積みで固定さえすれば問題なく処理されていくそうです。 loopingは、こうした石工独自の輸送システムをベースにプロジェクトへと展開していきました。黒い塊として切り出された複数のオブジェクトを、白縄でただ縛る構成が今作の全てです。各辺を補助線にして、三方向からエッジを誇張するように縄を這わせ造形を立ち上げていくのですが、最後の結び目を結び終えた瞬間には、作品制作と梱包作業が同時に完了しているのです。
