Building on our work to improve water infrastructure in the Manombo Special Reserve, we are expanding into coffee-centered agroforestry systems that address not only public and environmental health, but also economic poverty in the region. By replanting degraded land with shade-grown coffee trees, we are improving water quality, strengthening ecosystem health, and creating lasting economic opportunities for local communities. We buy coffee from local farmers at a premium, sell it in the United States, and reinvest 100% of the profits into clean water projects in the same communities where the coffee was grown.

Three villages near the protected Manombo forest in Madagascar now have 2000L water tanks to collect clean rainwater!
Community members in Sahamahitsy, Namahora, and Karimbelo highlighted that each of their villages were at risk of drinking contaminated water, and suggested rainwater collection as a solution to this health challenge.
Check out the video for a behind the scenes look at how, with the support of HIH, this community-designed solution was implemented and safe drinking water became accessible in each of these villages.

60 new rainwater harvesting systems completed in Manombo Commune!
In summer 2023, @dukeplanetlab uncovered high levels of bacterial contamination in village drinking water in South Eastern Madagascar.
Radical listening was carried out with the communities, and now 60 household rainwater catchment tanks have been built across 3 villages —bringing clean, safe drinking water to communities!
This project was a collaboration between @_improper , @tatirano.madagascar , @zarasoa.madagascar & @dukeplanetlab 🌍💙
We can’t wait to monitor how these systems are used & track their impact.

In the summer of 2023, members from Duke University’s PlanetLab tested the drinking water sources in a series of villages in Southeastern Madagascar. The results indicated alarmingly high levels of bacterial contamination. To address this problem, we helped facilitate a project between Health In Harmony, Tatirano, Zarasoa, and the PlanetLab to construct rainwater catchment tanks to provide clean, safe drinking water for the people in these villages.

Our team has been killing it out in Manombo Special Reserve on this project of building 60 household jars alongside builders from @healthinharmonyngo + @rainmadagascar + scientists at @improper.cc 🇲🇬
Incredible to see how knowledge sharing across different regions of madagascar has led to multiple groups of masons and organizations being able to harvest the power of the rain!! ☔️
When we started the Zarasoa project a year ago we got together a team of local builders, teachers, farmers, and anyone else who believed in the vision of learning how to build these jars and just said “we don’t know how to do this - but we’re gonna learn and keep learning!” And we did!
We’ve come a long way since then with having built 8 large systems in Alakamisy (Central Madagascar) and now collabing w other orgs to build 60 small systems on the East Coast (Rainforest near the Coast of Madagascar). 🇲🇬✨

Thank you to all who came out and supported us last weekend. It truly takes a village, and we’re so blessed to have people like you who make our community so committed, kind, and supportive. We’ve made an impact on the neurodivergent community to-date, raising more than $300K since 2021, but our visions of impact are so much greater for Thomas and many others.
