The Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT) puts a number on your breathing efficiency and CO2 tolerance levels.
Why is this important?
CO₂ isn’t just a byproduct—it helps unlock oxygen from blood to muscle (Bohr effect).
The better you tolerate rising CO₂, the more efficient breathing, improved endurance at set paces, and higher stress tolerance.
Score guide (seconds):
0–10 = Weak
11–25 = Limited
26–40 = Strong
41+ = Expert
Higher BOLT → better CO₂ tolerance: calmer, more efficient breathing, improved oxygen delivery, faster recovery.
Lower BOLT → quicker reactivity to CO₂, often tied to over-breathing and faster fatigue.
If your BOLT score is low, don’t panic. Even elite athletes often begin with a low score.
