Nyanga Tree by Dara Nfon aka Fanwi @dara_nfon@_fanwi
Fanwi is a Cameroonian born multidisciplinary artist. Though more commonly known as Dara Nfon and for her work in film, content creation, and modelling, Fanwi has been making jewellery for the last few years . This is their first sculpture and gallery submission.
This wire based tree sculpture is adorned with cowrie shells, a symbol or royalty and wealth in many African cultures. The beaded flowers are arranged to represent the Cameroonian flag. Green for the lush forests and fertile lands, also representing hope, growth, and natural wealth. Red for the blood shed during the fight for independence, though meant to be representing strength and unity these flowers are beaded with a darker more faded shade of red signifying the current division and bloodshed due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis often referred as a civil war or the “anglophone crisis”. Yellow for the sun, prosperity, and the Savannah of northern Cameroon. And a small pointed gold flower representing the “star of unity” a simple 5 pointed yellow star representing the many diverse ethnic groups within our borders.
Come see this work at the Edge Gallery, open Monday-Saturday 1-5pm for this final week of the exhibition. Exhibition funded by @mbartscouncil

My submission was fully inspired by my sister @ashhnfon She told me I should make something and I honestly didn’t know what to make since I’ve never done anything like this before but we brainstormed a bit and I came up with a concept I was very excited about (slide 9). This piece is very meaningful as explained in slide 8 and I had a lot of fun and learned a lot while making it. Thank you to everyone who came to the opening especially those who stopped to chat and ask questions. This experience has really inspired me to branch out more with my creativity (pun intended 🌳). Due to it’s personal significance this statue is not for sale but I did have a few people asking and I would LOVE to work with y’all and create some custom statues that you CAN keep. If you’re interested please dm me at @_fanwi I can’t wait to get started 🥰

@theedgegallery is going to be showing these pieces until March 2nd. My sister @ashesbt also has a piece (the best one if you ask me 🫣 pictured in slide 12) so I strongly encourage you to go check it out if you can find the time!

If you’d like to know more about or find ways to help out with the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon please check out the linktree in my bio. Cameroon is such a beautiful and vibrant country. My love for Enjoyment comes from my roots (wow another pun 🌴) and it pains me to see such joyful and compassionate people in such turmoil. Anything, even just informing yourself on what’s going on would be much much appreciated 🫶🏿
