“Sometimes I Identify - The Very Best of Ronnie and Natalie Pollock (1987-Present)” is most often referred to by the Pollocks as “The Daniel Barrow Project”. Here’s one of many trailers made by the Pollocks for this Friday’s presentation at @wfgcinematheque April 10th, 7PM.

I’m so proud to present and survey the performative media artworks of Ronnie and Natalie Pollock next month at the @wfgcinematheque . In the 1980s, “The Pollock & Pollock Gossip Show” was the Pollocks’ public access queer variety show - prankishly aimed at the tidy conformism, and homophobic prudery of 1980s Winnipeg. Ronnie would act as the empresario and host – cultivating a persona based on a 1950s “sock hop” DJ. Natalie was the co-host, and star spotlight dancer – often writhing on the floor in spandex, ripped panty hose, and the “Red Shoes of Human Rights!” “Sometimes I Identify – The Very Best of Ronnie and Natalie Pollock (1987 – present)” showcases the Pollocks’ joyful, messy Dionysian celebrations on public access, as well as the work of their YouTube channel, the “Pollock & Pollock News Channel” – a current affairs web series that can easily be reframed as cryptic, surrealist, eerily erotic, media art poetry. I will also be presenting excerpts from perhaps their most personal work - a featurette titled “Gay Nights”. This brand new ‘movie’ is structured as a TV show pleading for “gender choice” – employing a Pollock & Pollock queering strategy which I have described as “gender scramble.” The Pollocks’ personae and characters don’t simply evade the traditional binaries of “male” or “female”, they jostle and swarm the most exaggerated parodies of all genders to artful extremes. Dans le Montréal d’aujourd’hui, qui navigue entre l’augmentation des loyers, la crise climatique, la résurgence de l’homophobie et de la transphobie, parmi les nombreux défis, nous pouvons désormais compter sur notre propre galerie des glaces dans les vitrines de notre Village gai. Des projections auront lieu le samedi 28 février (Nuit Blanche), de 18h à 23h ; vendredi et samedi 6 et 7 mars, de 18h à 23h ; et vendredi et samedi 13 et 14 mars, de 19h à 23h. D’autres œuvres seront visibles en journée ou 24h/24 et 7j/7 pendant toute la durée de l’exposition. Sa pratique est explicitement obscure et romantique, imprégnée de pulsions et de désirs mystérieux. ____ Daniel Barrow is best known for his drawings, animations and performances that draw on analogue or antiquated aesthetics and techniques (such as Victorian paper dolls, overhead projectors and Amiga computer graphics). He uses storytelling to bring to life idiosyncratic protagonists who, like himself, construct their own elaborate dream worlds.
