Inspired by real-life events, this play tackles the challenging topic of human trafficking, interweaving issues of gender, class, and socio-cultural contexts. The protagonist, Meimei, is an orphaned young girl from northern China. Sold by her grandfather into a remote village, she must harness the power of imagination to survive. Strategically combining elements of technology, humor, choreography, live music, and audience participation, the play strives to evoke, to engage, and to educate. . CYBER CHILDHOOD attempts to materialize time (ambitious, I know!), alternatively as a tunnel with multitudes of leakages (like a time machine that goes wrong, which most time machines do), and as a shifting constellation of tangent circular planes that can be flipped upside down (like parallel universes but not exactly parallel, more like Everything Everywhere All At Once with a touch of Stranger Things). Fin de siècle futurism was much informed by primitivism; one’s vision of the future is often inspired by looking into someone else’s past. CYBER CHILDHOOD renders a cautiously playful future imagination of an alien and alienated past, hanging precariously on threads of collective memory or rather blissful amnesia. It negotiates and highlights the semiotic and physical distance between the wearer’s body and the garment that is simultaneously shelter and shackle. Informed by my (antithetical?) backgrounds in archaeology and theater, my designs explore the gaps and intersections between permanence and performance, between absence and presence, between object and subject, between the doing and the undoing. I fossilize fireworks. I excavate ephemerality. I fold time and space in search of what can never be found. . . .
