Last night was a dream.
We found out about the Pulitzer Prize in May but itās taken this long for it to start sinking in and then last night, it finally clicked. We won a Pulitzer!!!!
I tried my best to soak it all in and savour every moment. It really felt like a dream to be there with our team and to be recognized - for this story especially.
Itās been over two years since it all began and to be honest, Iām still processing the journey I went on to learn about my dad, my family and myself. I could never have predicted where we would end up but Iām so grateful to have been given the chance to take this on and for support from my family, friends and colleagues throughout.
Looking back, I realize how lucky we were to have been given the opportunity to tell this story when we did. The stars aligned at exactly the right time and our incredible team rose to the challenge. We worked for months to do justice to this important story and to honour the survivors who shared with us. This recognition is for all of us. š§”
Today weāre joined by Connie Walkerā , a veteran Cree journalist, who was the first podcaster to win both the Pulitzer Prize and a Peabody Award in the same year. She talks about the backstory of āā Stolen: Surviving St. Michaelāsā ,ā a deeply-personal investigation of the Canadian Indian residential school system, which she reported while at Gimlet, then the biggest podcast company in the world.
To Connie, all great audio documentaries should hinge on āa question that youāre trying to answer. It doesnāt have to be the question that you end up asking the whole way through,ā she says. āBut initially, you have to start with that.ā

I am so grateful I was able to hear Justice Murray Sinclair speak about his work with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. I learned so much every time and today, thinking of his incredible legacy, this moment stands out for me. Itās his answer when he was asked the question, āWhy canāt you just get over it?ā
Iām thinking of his family and sending my heartfelt condolences to them for their loss and my gratitude to him for all he did for all of us. š§”
