Congratulations to Peggy Plet, a recipient of the 2025 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for the Thomas Symons Award for Commitment to Conservation. For 18 years, Peggy has brought forward the long‑overlooked histories of Ontario’s early Black settlers through interviews, archival research, articles, tours and public presentations. Her recent work with the City of Waterloo Museum includes curating the exhibit ā€œSeeking Home: The Story of Black Settler Levi Carroll,ā€ which shares the life of a formerly enslaved man who found refuge in Waterloo. Peggy’s dedication continues to deepen public understanding of Black history in Ontario. Link in bio to read more about the 2025 recipients of the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards.

We applaud two recipients of the 2025 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation who protected Ontario’s built heritage. The Allan Gardens Palm House restoration preserved a historic greenhouse with improved accessibility. The redevelopment of 97 Victoria St. North in Kitchener integrated heritage materials into a vital community service hub. We are pleased to honour two recipients of the 2025 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation: The Potter’s Field Project in Ingersoll restored the identities of more than 400 people buried in an unmarked section of a cemetery through non‑invasive imaging and archival research. Dundas Turtle Watch has protected local turtle populations for more than a decade through nest monitoring, rescues and community education. International Workers’ Day (May 1) marks the role of organized labour in shaping workplace rights. In 1872, Hamilton workers launched the Nine-Hour Movement, walking off the job to demand time for family, education and civic life. Although the campaign failed, it helped lay the groundwork for a shorter workday and demonstrated the power of collective action. šŸ“ Nine-Hour Movement plaque, Hamilton Link in bio to read the plaque text.
