Congratulations to Peggy Plet, a recipient of the 2025 Lieutenant Governorās Ontario Heritage Award for the Thomas Symons Award for Commitment to Conservation.
For 18 years, Peggy has brought forward the longāoverlooked histories of Ontarioās early Black settlers through interviews, archival research, articles, tours and public presentations.
Her recent work with the City of Waterloo Museum includes curating the exhibit āSeeking Home: The Story of Black Settler Levi Carroll,ā which shares the life of a formerly enslaved man who found refuge in Waterloo.
Peggyās dedication continues to deepen public understanding of Black history in Ontario.

International Workersā Day (May 1) marks the role of organized labour in shaping workplace rights.
In 1872, Hamilton workers launched the Nine-Hour Movement, walking off the job to demand time for family, education and civic life. Although the campaign failed, it helped lay the groundwork for a shorter workday and demonstrated the power of collective action.
