Creation Process of Micaceous Pots
I had the honor of returning to Felipe Ortega’s studio in New Mexico to work with micaceous clay. This clay has a long history of being used for cookware, though it was rarely seen as an artistic vessel. Felipe Ortega was one of the visionaries who helped shift that perspective, showing that these pots could be appreciated not only as bean pots, but also as objects of beauty, pieces to bring into the daily ritual of cooking.
The process begins with collecting the clay. We bring offerings and prayers of thanks, honoring the earth with gratitude and recognition for all the clay gives to life. Back in the studio, the clay is placed in a concrete mixer with water, sifted to remove organic matter, and poured into vats. After resting for a day or two, it develops the right texture to be placed into the pugger, where it is mixed once more before becoming workable.
From there, the clay is ready to be shaped into beautiful bean pots, casserole dishes, cups, pitchers, and more. Stay tuned to see the full creation process unfold.
Had the incredible opportunity of getting to spend a week creating at @nicksceramicsstudio ! The space is beyond amazing and the owners even more so @nessa.deanda & @dinidixon
