A wonderful time the other week delivering an excellent two day workshop with @daniel_stewart_russell and @libertyhodes for @newbridgeproject Collective Studio 22/23. A workshop in three parts; collectively designing and building the boat of hope (1) to navigate up shit creek (2), full of all the junk that gets in the way of our creative practices, to our utopian model village (3). Having dreamed up this utopian shipbuilding workshop whilst a member of last year’s collective studio, it was a real joy to put it into practice and facilitate it with this excellent new cohort on their introductory two day intensive. Building on William Morris’ News from Nowhere time travelling boat, Swan Hunter and Tyneside’s shipbuilding past, the Tuxedo Princess (RIP), Michel Gondry’s forest in a boat from The Science of Sleep and many others, we built boats and hope and lovely connections for the year ahead.

For anyone who’s known me, or followed my ig stories closely for the past couple of years, will no doubt be aware of my deep love for the mysterious magnetic tape that has been dancing in the trees of Shieldfield.. Over recent years I’ve been filming and harvesting it, and finally I have a short film and performance to show for it. I debuted it @wharfchamberscc @heinouswhiner show last month, and would love to bring it back to Shieldfield/ @newbridgeproject soon 💗

Who on earth could be opening such a formidable line up of legends on Saturday night i hear you ask?? Well, it’s only your old pal @_birdbrains ! That’s right, the incredibly illusive noise-maker, tape-yanker, shrieker and skronker BirdBrains emerges once again airing out her nest, compiled of reams and reams of found-sound tape strewn from tree-tops and tower-blocks. What a treat! @ppp_bd (PPP) is an exciting initiative helping creatives take back Bradford’s empty buildings. Starting with 17–21 Chapel Street in Little Germany, PPP is transforming disused spaces—long kept empty by landlords focused on profit—into secure, affordable hubs for arts, events, and community projects. We spoke with @harryjelley and @_birdbrains , directors of PPP, about the challenges creatives face in precarious “meanwhile spaces,” the impact of land banking on Bradford’s city centre, and their vision for community ownership of buildings that benefit everyone. PPP has placed 17–21 Chapel Street in an asset lock, meaning it will always serve the community. Once refurbished and tenanted, the income generated will be reinvested to acquire more buildings, from studios and event spaces to community-owned shops, cinemas or even swimming pools. Anyone can get involved through PPP’s community share offer, starting from just £50, paid in five small instalments. Regardless of the amount invested, every member gets one vote, giving everyone an equal say in shaping the future of Bradford’s creative spaces. 🔗 Link to the full interview via the link in the bio.

Still absolutely buzzin from how special Friday night was. Big ups all the 100+ of youse that braved ol’ storm Claudia to have a nice time with @valleyfortitude @lilnathy and @gravel_band_leeds , was so lovely to see wharf full of old friends and new. Through sales of @north_or_nowt ’s gorgeous screen print, we’ve raised a whopping £160 for @antiraidsleeds to continue their excellent work 🙏 If you’re hungry for more @valleyfortitude , be sure to get a ticket for their show @nath_brudenell with @remembersportsband put on by the v excellent @dirtyotterleeds on Sat 7th March.
