INTRODUCING AMATEUR HOUR with @alexismahler at @__secondstorystudios___ Sunday May 17th 11:00am-12:30pm $35 drop-in fee A low-stakes, monthly gathering for adult amateur string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) looking to play with others! Every third Sunday at Second Story Studios! Drop in as you can. Scholarships available. :) The word “amateur” comes from the French amour, meaning love, and the Latin amatorem, meaning “lover” or “friend.” Amateur musicians were once valued as essential members of society, playing not for status or prestige but for the sheer joy of music. That’s the whole point, isn’t it? We find nourishment and connection through music. It’s meant to be loved and shared. Join us as we celebrate that, imperfectly, together. Note reading required. Music will be sent out in advance and we will spend the hour rehearsing in an ensemble. Instruments: Instruments are not provided. I recommend Kennedy Violins or David Kerr for an easy rental program! ||| About Alexis: Alexis Mahler has been teaching violin, viola, and cello in Portland for ten years, and runs her own private studio where she works with students of all ages and levels of experience. She is also a teaching artist with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, and assists in the public school orchestra programs in Portland and Vancouver. In addition to teaching, Alexis enjoys an abundant life as a performer. A songwriter, session player, and accompanist for local artists, playing music with her friends and students is her favorite thing. Alexis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance and Music Education from Lawrence University. A pic of ME to remind you that I’m leading a design workshop at @__secondstorystudios___ on April 18th! Most know me as a photographer, but I’ve years of professional freelance and full-time design experience under my belt. I can’t wait to share all the assets and resources I’ve accumulated over the years! I’ll walk you through how I create show and event flyers, and then we’ll each get to create our own utilizing my shared assets: fonts, textures, you name it. And you’ll get to take home dozens of license-free materials to use in future designs! Hope to see ya there :) 📸 @analogdanica

We are so excited to have our friend @cbruyac back to teach a show poster 101 workshop in April! … DIY Design! Show Poster 101 Workshop with Camille Bruya A workshop to improve your visual identity through show flyer design, utilizing free and open-source materials. Saturday, April 18 11am-1pm | $60 *sliding scale scholarships available sign up 🔗 in b!ooo :) ... About the workshop: When it comes to promoting yourself and your music, you shouldn’t settle for run-of-the-mill visuals. But sometimes hiring a pro visual designer isn’t possible. That’s when the knowledge of design principles and their application can come in handy, and knowing where to find open-source assets to support your visual identity. We’ll start the workshop learning the basics of design such as color, composition, typography, and where to access free-to-use content. Then using Canva’s free software, we’ll create a digital flyer together—Camille will provide sample information and materials to build out the design, or you’re welcome to create a flyer for your next event utilizing Camille’s provided assets. At the end of the workshop, you’ll receive dozens of free fonts, illustrations, and backgrounds, as well as links to download open-source materials for future designs. It’s recommended that you bring a laptop, tablet, or smart phone to design with, as well as to create a free Canva account beforehand. About Camille: Camille Bruya is a Portland-based musician turned visual creative specializing in graphic design and photography. She has worked both in-house and freelance for numerous music-related entities such as Red Light Management and the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, as well as one-on-one with local and touring musicians. Her expertise lies within analog techniques, such as hand-lettering, physical texture creation, and film photography, to create uniquely compelling visuals. Her books are open for client work this summer and fall, 2026.
