Outsider, Elsewhere.
Xiaohan Luo Solo Exhibition, London
12â17 March, 2026
It is the first time I participated in the whole process of an exhibitionâcurating, installing, and promoting. I still remember those cold and rainy days, walking through the city to find a space for the work. Not every gallery was open to moving image practices, but I am deeply grateful that The Handbag Factory Gallery
@aschandbagfactory welcomed me. You made this possible.
Sound always acts like a ghost that tangles with me. I come from painting, yet photography and film have always had a deep influence on my practice. I am drawn to them as forms of recordingâways of holding onto something that is nearly slipping away, something that cannot be fully kept.
I want to capture this ghost-like quality of sound and its impact on my body and consciousness. Sound never stays still; it moves through me, passing through the body like a force without visible form, leaving only traces of pressure, rhythm, and disturbance.
Through image, I am trying to record this sensation. Not to fix sound into a single form, but to let its movement appear as a traceâbetween hearing and seeing, between composition and perception, between what is made and what disappears.
This is also the first time I gathered almost all the works from my Sound Series into one exhibition. I have never wanted to define myself through hearing loss, yet it is an experience that inevitably shapes how I perceive and construct sound. Perhaps this tension is what I am working through in the work itself.
Special thanks to
@fin_pupapress for being my art director and for writing such a beautiful text for the exhibition. I will share it in a later post.
And thanks to
@juneadartuk and Nick for being part of the process, and
@ellosexy for helping with installation and the screens. None of this would have been possible without you.
