Rockefeller Dining Room - Fritz Glarner revisited by Alfredo Häberli
One of the centerpieces of Museum Haus Konstruktivâs collection is Fritz Glarnerâs Rockefeller Dining Room, originally designed in 1963-64 for the New York City apartment of Nelson A. Rockefeller and his wife, and which exemplifies the principle of Relational Painting.
Fritz Glarner, part of the extended circle of Zurich Concretists, moved to New York in 1936, where he developed a close friendship with Mondrian, who had relocated there in
1940. Deeply influenced by Mondrian, Glarner adopted a similar limited color palette of primary colors-red, yellow, and blue.
However, instead of incorporating the Rockefellersâ furniture elements, Häberliâs contemporary design is tailored to suit the current museum situation and the historical spatial setting. The results comprise a dining table, chairs, a specially made carpet, curtains and a new lighting system.
