when i took my first pole class last june, i had no idea i would be competing a little more than a year later (much less placing!) so this has been an absolutely wild ride. i have a lot of regrets about my performance but it was fun to choreograph something inspired by argentine tango. i no longer dance tango as often as i would like, so i’m glad i got to show that part of myself on this stage 🥀

【嫲嫲 / 我】my paternal grandmother was born in penang in 1934 to a family of cantonese origin. somewhere along the way, she moved to singapore where she survived the japanese occupation, raised five children almost singlehandedly, and then decades later, raised me and my sister too. here she is, aged 19 (and with a crazy 22-inch waist), participating in a beauty pageant. i remember seeing this photograph as a child and then dreaming of this spiderweb dress. it seemed to me the most glamorous thing anyone could wear. and so of course when i found a spiderweb dress i had to go get some pictures taken in it. is this post a transparent excuse to upload some pictures from my pole photoshoot? duh obviously yes. but i also want to brag about my grandmother the pageant queen, who will be 91(!) this year and still impossibly beautiful to me. (last picture’s from a photoshoot i got her for her 88th birthday—doesn’t she look amazing for her age? and no, she hasn’t seen any of my pole pictures yet 😂)
