Another highlight for our Saturday group show! Little Bluestem Ensemble ✨ Little Bluestem Ensemble is a 5-piece group formed specifically for Spout Fest, though several members performed together during an Emergent Forms show in 2025 where they improvised on the spot. Expect a fusion of ambient, psych, and Americana!  Barry Osborne (@5stringwhale ) is a Denver-based 5-string banjo player and songwriter who performs solo, with indie folk band Distance Walk, and all points in-between. Depending on the setting, folks have likened his sound to a diy John Hartford, scratchy 78 records, or “cigarettes in autumn.” Golden Brown (@goldenbrown.music ) is the instrumental music of Stefan Beck. Played on acoustic and electric guitars, other stringed instruments, and keyboards. Drawing from a wide range of inspirations, Beck’s music sits at the intersection of psychedelic folk, ambient, cosmic Americana, and new age. Beck is also part of the instrumental psychedelic trio Prairiewolf (@prairiewolfprairiewolf ). Philip Panos (@filpanosmusicalsaw ) uses the musical saw to create abstract soundscapes and improvisations, perform folk tunes, classical music and more. He is based out of Denver CO and is also active in the band Field Theory (@field_._theory ). Sun Swept (@sun_swept_ ) is Sarah Christiansen of Denver, Colorado. Sarah works with flutes and electronics to create pastoral cosmic ambient music. Sarah is also an improviser who plays with several different ensembles including Field Theory and Snowswept  and other projects of varying permanence. Sarah is passionate about organizing music events and helps put on the Open Field Jam at DMV, Emergent Forms AND is one of the organizers of Spout Fest! Aaron Dooley @Aron_dool - Born to think. Cursed to feel. For 20 years, Aaron Dooley has been making music for the sake of human connection. May his bass lines rumble away the pain.

We’re excited to share that we have a show with our friends Ember Pond and Ships to Sink at Mutiny on Saturday, May 30 at 3pm! Distance Walk went away for awhile, but we never wanted to give it up. Mostly we’re all really busy with life stuff and families and other bands. We’re morphing into a more instrumental sound, and we’re going to have a little more of a rotating cast so we can keep things going. For the Mutiny show I’ll be on banjo, Seth on guitar, Ty on pedal steel, and Joe on bass. All that said, everyone is still in the fold to varying degrees and as time allows, and I am very grateful for. See you soon! - Barry PS Thanks as always to @danherro for the gorgeous poster art, and Ember for designing the poster

“oh, kiss of Walt Whitman is still on my lips” - just a little banjo tune I felt like sharing. Flubbed some of the lyrics but the feel is right. #banjo #banjo #clawhammerbanjo #songwriting #waltwhitman

Really excited to be part of this year’s Denver Spout Fest as part of Little Bluestem Ensemble! On Friday May 8th, there will be a special Spout Fest edition of Emergent Forms at @d.m.v_co And on Saturday May 9th, join us at Joseph P Martinez Park for an amazing lineup of group performers. Little Bluestem Ensemble features musicians and friends I first met at an edition of Emergent Forms over the winter - @sun_swept_ @filpanosmusicalsaw @goldenbrown.music @aron_dool and @r_a_y_o_n_i_s_m A huge thanks to everyone from that community, especially S from Sun Swept for making me feel so welcome. The improvisational gatherings I’ve been part of over the last year have been a revelation for me, it’s such a fantastic scene. Anyway, hope to see y’all at Spout Fest, follow @denverspoutfest on IG for more details!

“Will you go, lassie, go?” It’s been a strange, concerningly hot spring here in the Inner Mountain West, and yet hope springs eternal. “”Wild Mountain Thyme” is one of my favorite melodies, and with the summer time a comin’, here’s my instrumental take. The modern version was popularized - developed (?) - by the McPeake Family, based off an earlier Scottish song/tune, “The Braes of Balquhither.” #WildMountainThyme #Banjo #ClawhammerBanjo #FolkTunes

Felt cute idk might delete later Working title: Leopold Bloom at the Day Rave Does it need a bridge? Needs diatonic harmonica tho Did a deep listen to Sinead’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” this morning and realized something I’d never noticed before. In one of the early verses she sings about throwing her arms around “every boy” she meets, but in the final verse she pines for “Mama.” Anyhoo #clawhammerbanjo

“The Fields of Athenry”: Today would have been my dad’s 79th birthday. This was one of his favorite songs. I’ll be tipping back an (NA) Guinness tonight in his honor. “ By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling “Michael, they have taken you away For you stole Trevelyan’s corn So the young might see the morn Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay” Low lie the Fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It’s so lonely ‘round the Fields of Athenry By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling “Nothing matters, Mary, when you’re free Against the famine and the crown I rebelled, they cut me down Now you must raise our child with dignity” Low lie the Fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It’s so lonely ‘round the Fields of Athenry By a lonely harbour wall, she watched the last star falling As the prison ship sailed out against the sky For she’ll live in hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay It’s so lonely ‘round the Fields of Athenry Low lie the Fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It’s so lonely ‘round the Fields of Athenry” - music and lyrics by Peter St John #Banjo #ClawhammerBanjo #IrishTunes #FolkMusic
