Thank you to one of our members, Bryce, for writing our land acknowledgment 💜
“Acknowledging the land is an Indigenous protocol used to express gratitude to those who reside here, and to honour the Indigenous people who have lived and worked on this land historically and presently. It allows us the opportunity to appreciate the unique role and relationship that each of us has with the land, and provides a gentle reminder of the broader perspectives that expand our understanding to encompass the long-standing, rich history of the land, and our privileged role in residing here.
To recognize the land is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose territory you reside on, and a way of honouring the Indigenous people who have been living and working on the land from time immemorial. It is important to understand the long-standing history that has brought you to reside on the land, and to seek to understand your place within that history. Land acknowledgements do not exist in a past tense, or historical context: colonialism is a current ongoing process, and we need to build our mindfulness of our present participation. It is also worth noting that acknowledging the land is Indigenous protocol. (taken from: /knowtheland/).”

4BHRS is a rapid, mobile outreach response to social health challenges keeping people who use substances and the unhoused population marginalized and at significant risk for re-traumatization and severe health outcomes.
We believe that building healthy communities is a collective effort and that means working together. We hold a collective belief that all people are deserving of compassion and wellbeing. We advocate against discrimination, systemic violence and harm, and policy failure. We advocate for the health and safety of all people, including people who use drugs and engage in other risky/unlawful behaviours/acts.
We believe in building local relationships and creating a network of people interested in supporting those we serve. 💜

The opioid crisis
Outlier on the Prairies
Why are drug-overdose deaths rising in Edmonton, even as they fall across the province and the country?

While overdose deaths are declining across Alberta, Canada, and the U.S., Edmonton is going in the opposite direction.
In 2025, 764 people died in Edmonton from drug poisonings—surpassing previous records. And that number may still rise as more cases are confirmed.
Outreach worker Angie Staines has reversed more than 150 overdoses since 2020. She says every year feels like it can’t get worse—but it does.
Experts say there’s no single cause. It’s a combination of:
a highly toxic, unpredictable drug supply
limited access to services like supervised consumption sites
changes in policing and displacement of people into more isolated areas
People are being pushed further out of public view—into places where no one is there to help if an overdose happens.
The drug supply itself is also becoming more dangerous. Substances like carfentanil and “tranq-dope” (opioids mixed with sedatives) are increasing. These mixtures can make overdoses harder to reverse, even with naloxone.
In Edmonton, carfentanil was involved in 69% of deaths, compared to 16% in Calgary.
At the same time, harm reduction services have been reduced. Supervised consumption sites have closed or are set to close, and outreach supports have dwindled.
Frontline workers say a single approach focused only on recovery is not enough. Not everyone is ready or able to access those services, and without other supports, people are left at greater risk.
Despite the challenges, community workers continue to respond, educate, and save lives.
As Staines puts it:
“This is a marathon, not a race.”

Community Cooks: Palestine part 2!
We couldn’t resist sharing some extra shots of the beautiful meal from our Palestinian Community Cooks class. The fresh and healthy side salads, the aromatic spices of the rice and chickpeas, the warmth and tenderness of the chicken, all finished with a dollop of herby yogurt on the side. It was as delicious as it was colorful! We loved cooking with Palestinian chef @chefazizayaseer at the gorgeous kitchen and hall space @cpca.edmonton ! 🇵🇸
Big shoutout to @4b.harm.reduction who picked up and delivered over 130 of these warm meals last night! The 4B team is incredible and we are so lucky to partner with them on this program. Please consider following and supporting their good work in Edmonton!
