This roof was leaking and showing all the signs of a system that couldn’t dry: wet insulation, condensation, and moisture getting trapped where it shouldn’t.
The challenge was fixing it without disturbing the interior tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling. Everything had to happen from the outside.
The assembly was rebuilt to properly manage moisture:
• smart vapor control layer installed from above
• vapor-open insulation
• fully taped, airtight, water-resistive layer
• vented gap to create a dedicated drying pathway
Now the roof can dry in both directions depending on the season, instead of holding onto moisture.

A few years ago, @newframeworks@buildhelm was already showing what the future of high-performance building could look like. This project in Massachusetts used prefabricated wall panels made with agricultural waste, renewable wood products, and smart moisture control strategies instead of foam-heavy, petrochemical-based assemblies. The panels combined straw insulation, wood fiber exterior insulation, and intelligent vapor control layers to create assemblies that stay dry, durable, and energy efficient. Airtightness improves thermal performance, while vapor-open materials maintain drying potential and help support long-term building health. Natural materials reduce embodied carbon while contributing to healthier indoor spaces, and prefabrication brings precision, speed, and quality to the jobsite.

This Studio 804 project from a few years back demonstrates how efficient shelter can be both durable and deeply practical by combining thoughtful design with high-performance enclosure systems. The assembly featured INTELLO smart vapor retarder for interior airtightness and adaptive moisture control, helping the wall system stay dry while reducing unwanted air leakage. Exterior layers incorporated weather-resistant membranes to protect the structure during construction and through changing seasons.
