Big moves on the exterior. Plinth poured, Adhero sealed, and glass and windows going in. We’re watching this building come to life piece by piece as the finish line approaches
Fall semester recap!
From warehouse days to on-site milestones, this fall we watched our building take shape piece by piece. Roof placement and TPO roof completed, insulation and sheathing going in, curtain wall and exterior walls standing tall, glulam columns and beams set, and plenty of concrete pours. Plus all the prep that made them happen.
A whole lot of teamwork, learning, and getting our hands dirty!
Yesterday I stopped by the @studio804_inc build site. The students were fresh / renewed from holiday break and the weather almost felt like Spring.
The roof was installed prior to break.
I love the 9’ eave soaring towards the southern sun.
It’s so interesting to watch the process & progress.
Bravo #studio804 & #danrockhill !
@kuarchitecture
A couple days ago I stopped at the job site of the @studio804_inc of the emerging one level modern home on East 12th Street in Brook Creek neighborhood.
Professor Dan Rockhill states the goal is to have the roof installed prior to Christmas break.
The students are “all hands on deck” or as Bachman-Turner Overdrive stated in 1973, they are TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS.
The students are laser focused on the multilayered tasks of building the house with Dan’s guidance. For many, this project is their physical & permanent legacy @arcd_ku & @universityofkansas -
As I like to say, this project is their signature and gift to our city.
I am forever grateful to the #studio804 students & #danrockhill for their dedication to modern & sustainable architecture.
I stopped by the @studio804_inc #designbuild Saturday and was pleased to see the beautiful wood beams were installed. They remind me of ribs on our bodies. The skeleton that contains vital organs. In addition to the form we take as human beings. Ok- I’ll stop with that analogy.
Next, the students will start building around these components so it can be buttoned up to start working inside.
This was a monumental part of the process of building. I look forward to watching the build process unfold!

The team’s been hard at work prepping and finishing the glulams for this year’s house! We’re excited to see these beams and columns come to life as a key sustainable feature in our design.
These beams carry their own history. Originally milled in the 1950s, the glulams were sourced from a Los Angeles building and repurposed by Olson Kundig for the “38 Beams” instillation at Design Miami. Thanks to Olson Kundig’s donation, we have the opportunity to find new life for the glulams in this year’s house!
@olsonkundig
Join five current Studio 804 students for an open Q&A session in Marvin Forum at 12:15 PM on October 22nd for KU 4th year students.
This is a great chance to hear firsthand about the Studio 804 experience, how the program works, and ask any questions you might have about the process or life in 804. The session will run until 1:00 PM, and Topper’s Pizza will be provided afterwards. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and learn more!
If you have any questions, please contact Kennedy Williams ([email protected]).
I had the pleasure of stopping by the new @studio804_inc home located in Brook Creek today on East 12th. The subdivision created by @structrestruct -
This year is the 30th year that #danrockhill and his students in the Studio 804 class build a home in their final year. It’s literally a thesis built on sweat, effort, teamwork, good design & lots of planning.
This year there are 19 students. I got a sneak peek at the drawings. It’s going to be a cool one level home.
It’s not always glamorous, building a home. Sometimes you have to dig the footings for the foundation by hand. This looks like another strong, committed crew. I look forward to seeing them work together to manifest another cool modern home for someone in Lawrence, Kansas. @universityofkansas & @arcd_ku is fortunate to have Dan doing his thing and students who are willing to work hard, making sacrifices to accommodate a demanding school year.
Some final photography from 1040 New York St. Super proud of the class of 2025, all our hard work and looking forward to see what Studio804 brings to the table next year! Good luck class of 2026!
