Artist Statement for my piece:
This work presents a vivid, stylized tableau of contemporary Atlanta, situating a lowrider beneath the iconic architectural rhythms of Plaza Fiesta along the Buford Highway corridor. In the foreground, a figure adorned in a vibrantly rendered, Aztec-inspired mask confronts the viewer with both immediacy and symbolism, evoking layered histories of identity, migration, and cultural inheritance. Executed with assertive linework and a saturated, celebratory palette, the composition merges graphic intensity with folkloric resonance.
The piece serves as a visual meditation on Atlanta as a dynamic cultural nexus—particularly the Buford Highway area, where a confluence of Latino, Asian, and myriad other diasporic communities intersect and coalesce. Through the juxtaposition of the lowrider, a potent emblem of Chicano cultural expression, and the architectural and social fabric of Plaza Fiesta, the work articulates a space where traditions are neither static nor isolated, but continuously renegotiated and reimagined.
Ultimately, this composition examines the generative power of multiculturalism within the urban landscape. It posits Atlanta not merely as a site of convergence, but as a fertile ground in which diverse cultural identities actively shape, enrich, and propel the city’s evolving narrative.
